On October 12th, nearly 150 students from the Chư Păh District Ethnic Boarding Junior High School listened to a presentation on reducing child marriage and consanguineous marriage.

Chư Păh is a mountainous district in Gia Lai province where ethnic minorities account for over 55% of the population. The lives of the people are still difficult, and the awareness of some people remains limited, leading to the persistence of outdated customs, including child marriage and consanguineous marriage. As of September 2024, there were 25 cases of child marriage in the district.

The propaganda conference organized by the Ethnic Affairs Department of Chư Păh district aimed to disseminate educational content and provide counseling on reproductive health for adolescents and young people; to enhance knowledge, skills, and behaviors for adolescents and young people in self-protection and health improvement, and to guide their future; and to raise awareness of respecting and complying with the law, preventing and deterring illegal acts among teenagers.

At the conference, students listened to presentations on topics such as the current situation of child marriage and arranged marriage in the district; the harmful effects of child marriage and arranged marriage on individuals, families, and society; the Law on Marriage and Family; the importance of sex education in schools; methods of contraception for teenagers; and adolescent reproductive health. They also shared information about customs and traditions related to marriage in ethnic minority areas, self-care practices, and ways to eliminate outdated customs.

During the media conference, the students had the opportunity to interact and confidently ask questions to the speakers about preventing child marriage in schools and in their villages; how to handle situations when developing romantic feelings for a classmate; and future career orientation. All of the students' questions were answered satisfactorily and helpfully by the speakers.

Em Rơ Châm Hoa, a 9th-grade student at the Chư Păh District Ethnic Boarding Junior High School, shared: "The extracurricular activity and awareness campaign on child marriage and family law helped me gain more knowledge about marriage and family law; I understand that child marriage and family law are violations of the law and cause serious consequences for myself and my family. From that, I know how to prevent and combat child marriage, and focus on my studies to build a better future."

It is known that in 2024, Chu Pah district developed a plan to disseminate legal information on the Law on Marriage and Family, and to prevent and combat child marriage and extramarital affairs at 17 secondary schools in communes and towns. To date, the district has organized the program in 5 secondary schools with nearly 2,000 students participating.

Mr. Luyen Van Toan, Deputy Head of the Ethnic Affairs Department of Chu Pah District, said: "The majority of students in the mountainous areas of the district are children of ethnic minorities. Therefore, the dissemination of information on preventing child marriage in schools is carried out in many different forms, with rich and vivid content. In particular, through real-life stories of child marriage in the locality, students will better understand the consequences for themselves, their families, and society; raising awareness about gender issues in schools, adolescent health, etc. From there, each student will become an active collaborator in disseminating information to friends, relatives, and people in their villages, working together to combat child marriage and build a more prosperous, beautiful, and civilized homeland."
