Launched in 2018, VNL quickly proved its leading prestige in the volleyball world. Based on the scoring coefficient of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), this tournament is only slightly less prestigious than the Olympics and the World Championship.
And also through FIVB, the Italians are proving their absolute strength. In 2022, Italy will win the tournament for the first time, breaking the domination streak of the US women's volleyball team (champion since 2018, except for 2020 when the tournament was canceled due to the pandemic).
In 2024, Italy entered the VNL tournament with a shocking 0-3 loss to Poland in the first round of the group stage. In the 7th round, they lost 2-3 to Brazil on June 1.
But that was also the last time the Italian women's volleyball team had to accept defeat. They won 8 consecutive matches to win the VNL championship in 2024.
Not long after, the Italian women's volleyball team won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics with a record of 6 wins, extending their unbeaten streak.
By VNL 2025, Italy had grown even stronger with the feat of winning all 15 matches in the tournament, including 12 group stage matches and 3 knockout round matches.

Including other matches, Italy has extended its unbeaten streak to 29 consecutive matches. Although this is not a record in volleyball, Italy's consecutive victory in 2 VNL tournaments and 1 Olympic tournament is an unprecedented feat in history.
In the 2019-2021 period, the US also did this (winning 2 consecutive VNL championships and then the Olympics), but they did not have a long unbeaten streak like Italy.
The journey of the Italian girls over the past year was even more impressive when they crushed the US (VNL quarter-finals) and Poland (VNL semi-finals) - two of the strongest volleyball teams in history with a score of 3-0.
With this feat, Italy firmly holds the world number one position, and is certainly the strongest candidate for the Women's Volleyball World Championship, taking place at the end of August in Thailand.
