The Vietnam U23 team was placed in the second seed group, along with South Korea, Australia, and Iraq. According to the draw results, coach Philippe Troussier's team is in Group D, facing Uzbekistan, Kuwait, and Malaysia.
Meanwhile, the Southeast Asian teams were divided into groups: Thailand was in Group C to face Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Tajikistan; Indonesia faced Qatar, Australia, and Jordan.
The 2024 AFC U23 Championship will take place from April 15th to May 3rd, 2024, with four venues selected: Al Khor, Lusail, Al Rayyan, and Doha (Qatar). These are all locations that hosted matches in the 2022 World Cup.
The teams in each group will play a round-robin format. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals. The three highest-ranked teams at the 2024 AFC U23 Championship will qualify directly for the 2024 Paris Olympics as representatives of Asia.
Meanwhile, the team that finished fourth will play a play-off match against the fourth-placed team from the U23 African Championship to compete for a last-chance ticket to the Olympic Games in France next year.
The 2024 AFC U23 Asian Championship will feature 15 teams: South Korea, Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, UAE, Iraq, Thailand, China, Jordan, Kuwait, Tajikistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and host nation Qatar.
In the qualifying round, the Vietnam U23 team, under the guidance of coach Troussier, secured first place in Group C with 7 points. Accordingly, Vietnam U23 won against Guam (6-0) and Yemen (1-0) before drawing with Singapore (2-2) in a match that was merely a formality as they had already secured first place.
This is the fifth time the Vietnam U23 team has participated in the AFC U23 Asian Championship. Vietnam's best achievement in this tournament was finishing as runners-up in Changzhou (China) in 2018, under coach Park Hang Seo.
