Fake, poor quality bird's nests flood TikTok, businesses worry about 'losing right at home'

According to a representative of a bird's nest production enterprise in Ninh Thuan province, a bird's nest product advertised by a famous TikToker with a content of 30% but priced at only 15,000 VND/bottle is a typical example of irregularity and fraud.

On May 8, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ) held a conference to implement the protocol on exporting raw bird's nest and clean bird's nest to China.

At this conference, many businesses were worried about the market being flooded with fake, imitation, and poor quality bird's nests and said that without strict management and traceability, the Vietnamese bird's nest industry would "lose right at home".

Mr. Phan Viet Hung - CEO of Vietnam Bird's Nest Company - said that in our country's market, the situation of fake and poor quality bird's nests is rampant, causing serious confusion for consumers and directly affecting the reputation and value of genuine bird's nests, as well as the long-term development of the industry.

"A bird's nest product advertised by a famous TikToker with a 30% bird's nest content but priced at only 15,000 VND/bottle is a typical example of irregularity and fraud.

Therefore, we propose to consider and move towards mandatory traceability for all bird's nest products in the Vietnamese market. This is an urgent solution to protect consumers and build a transparent bird's nest market" - Mr. Hung cited.

Mr. Hung also suggested that a mandatory and unified standard for bird's nest packaging should be issued soon. The fact that businesses self-declared their products without standards, especially regarding the bird's nest content (raw bird's nest, fresh bird's nest, percentage of bird's nest), is creating great confusion and loopholes for fake and poor quality bird's nest.

"We need to look at lessons from neighboring countries, typically Indonesia, a country with a history of fierce price competition, which has had a significant impact on Malaysian bird's nest businesses.

"If we do not take drastic action now to build internal strength, ensure quality and transparency for Vietnamese bird's nest products, we will find it difficult to compete effectively and risk following in the footsteps of foreign competitors right at home," said Mr. Viet Hung.

There must be standards to affirm the value of Vietnamese bird's nest.

Ms. Ly Hua Thi Lan Phuong - member of the Vietnam Bird's Nest Association - said that currently, the bird's nest market is facing many difficulties in management for official export.

"Many foreign bird's nests are imported into Vietnam but are not strictly controlled by barriers and technical standards, leading to Vietnamese consumers using many poor quality bird's nests.

The output of foreign bird's nests imported into Vietnam is greater than the output of domestic bird's nests. Despite the official export protocol, the price of bird's nests has not increased, and has even dropped significantly compared to before" - Ms. Phuong reflects the actual situation.

If anyone pays attention to e-commerce platforms, especially TikTok Shop, the industry report of this unit shows that bird's nest industry sales are always in the top 10. Anyone can trade bird's nest on TikTok Shop, even individuals who do not register for business.

"Who controls the quantity, origin and quality of these bird's nests? I sincerely hope that the authorities will inspect and control the quality and have standards for the domestic market so that we can affirm the value and quality of bird's nests at home before developing the foreign market" - Ms. Phuong expressed her wish.

Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine Duong Tat Thang emphasized that production organization and traceability are very important for the bird's nest industry.

Therefore, the department will deploy the construction of a traceability system and farming area planning, thereby improving product quality.

Regarding the proposal to issue standards, Mr. Thang said that the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine will consider developing them for issuance in the near future.
