In the early morning of July 2, third seed Zverev was eliminated by little-known player Arthur Rinderknech with a score of 2-3 (6-7, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, 4-6) in the first round of Wimbledon 2025.
The two players delivered a dramatic match that lasted 4 hours and 40 minutes. This was the longest match since Wimbledon 2025 began.
However, this result hit Zverev's ambition in this year's tournament. The German tennis player could hardly swallow this defeat.
After the match, he described himself as feeling empty, joyless and in need of therapy.
"I've never felt so empty. There's a complete lack of joy, even outside of tennis," he said.
Asked if he had considered therapy, he replied: “This is probably the first time in my life that I really needed it.”
It is worth mentioning that his opponent Arthur Rinderknech has never passed the first round of Wimbledon but did not lose a single serve against the player who has reached the Grand Slam final three times.
At the same time, Zverev implied that the off-court pressures related to allegations of domestic violence and abuse had taken a toll on him, although he has repeatedly denied the allegations and the case in a Berlin court was dismissed last year.
“I have gone through a lot of difficulties in the media and in life in general,” he shared.
Earlier this year, Zverev was booed by a spectator at a tournament in Munich over the allegations and asked security to remove the person.
