Song Joong Ki's film career has taken a downturn after two consecutive films failed at the box office. Many viewers have advised him to return to acting in television dramas.
According to Newsen, the film “Bogota: City of the Lost,” starring Song Joong Ki, is struggling at the box office.
According to data from the Korean Film Council on January 7th, "Bogota: City of the Lost," directed by Kim Seong Je and released on December 31st, has only accumulated 336,348 viewers so far.
Despite being a newly released film, "Bogota: City of the Lost" was surpassed by two earlier releases, "Harbin" (directed by Woo Min Ho) and "Firefighters" (directed by Kwak Kyung Taek).
“Bogota: City of the Lost” tells the story of Guk Hee (played by Song Joong Ki), who travels to Bogota, Colombia – a land of new hope – after the IMF crisis.
There, he becomes involved with influential figures in the local Korean community, such as Soo Young (Lee Hee Joon) and Sergeant Park (Kwon Hae Hyo).
Filming began in 2019 and took five years before the film was released. Production faced numerous obstacles, including a temporary halt to filming in Colombia due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
Despite overcoming numerous challenges, the film is still struggling to attract viewers and is causing disappointment.
“Hopeless” (directed by Kim Chang Hoon), also starring Song Joong Ki, was released in October 2023, but its box office performance was not good, attracting only 260,000 viewers.
On the online community theqoo, a post suggested that Song Joong Ki is losing his form due to the failure of two consecutive films. This could be considered a setback in his career.
However, many argue that Song Joong Ki has not had a strong track record in the film industry. Aside from "Werewolf Boy," his other films have not been particularly impressive.
One commenter remarked on Song Joong Ki's acting in most of his films: "I'm not even curious about how he'll portray the role anymore. No matter what he does, it feels like he's always playing the same character from his previous works."
Conversely, viewers rated Song Joong Ki as doing better in that area. television.
Throughout his nearly 20-year career, Song Joong Ki has only taken on leading roles in five television dramas, including "Nice Guy," "Descendants of the Sun," "Arthdal Chronicles," "Vincenzo," and "Reborn Rich," but most of them have been highly successful.
Some of Song Joong Ki's other supporting and minor roles are also popular, such as Geo Yong Ha in "Sungkyunkwan Scandal".
Furthermore, many believe that Song Joong Ki chooses better television drama scripts than film scripts. That's why, despite having few leading roles in television dramas, Song Joong Ki remains a top star in South Korea.
Last October, it was reported that Song Joong Ki would be joining the new drama "My Youth" alongside Seo Ji Hoon and Chun Woo Hee. Viewers are hoping that the actor will return to acting in more television dramas in the future.
