India: New regulations against deepfake technology

The Indian Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said it will issue a new set of regulations to deal with deepfake technology (using artificial intelligence - AI to create fake, false images, sounds and videos to imitate human voices and faces).

This technology is often used for malicious purposes or to spread misinformation.

Under the new rules, accountability for deepfakes will fall on both creators and the platforms where the content is hosted, and they will also be subject to penalties for violations.

The news said that within the next 10 days, the authorities will identify the content that can be handled, in four main areas: detecting fake behaviors, preventing the spread of false information, strengthening reporting mechanisms and raising public awareness.
