National award-winning work by photographer Tran Tuan Viet
This photograph was taken by photographer Tran Tuan Viet at dawn in October 2023, at Ba Den Mountain, Tay Ninh . The image captures the moment when the statue of the Goddess of Mercy, Tay Bo Da Son, is partially hidden in the clouds and early morning sun, harmonizing with the beautiful natural scenery of Ba Den Mountain, creating a mystical scene.
Ba Den Mountain, known as the "Roof of Southern Vietnam," is also a sacred place associated with the legend of Linh Son Thanh Mau, attracting millions of pilgrims and worshippers every year.
In particular, spiritual structures of such scale as the statue of the Goddess of Mercy on Tay Bo Da Son Mountain and the statue of the Maitreya Bodhisattva, constructed from 6,688 sandstone blocks, are increasingly enhancing the sacred beauty and abundant nature of the land, contributing to making Ba Mountain an endless source of inspiration for photographers.
The Buddha statue on Mount Xibuddha, featured in the artwork, stands 72 meters tall and is cast from over 170 tons of copper, setting a record for "the tallest copper Buddha statue in Asia located on a mountaintop".
The author's black and white photograph also won an honorable mention at the 2023 International Monochrome Photography Competition, Nature category for professional photographers.
The author shared that he vividly remembers the feeling of sitting amidst the swirling mist, listening to the peaceful, resonant sounds of Buddhist music on the summit of Mount Ba Den. "Perhaps I've never composed in such a space before. When the clouds enveloped the mountain, visibility was limited to just a few meters below, but using a drone, I witnessed an astonishing sight: the statue of the Goddess of Mercy appearing and disappearing within the clouds," he said.
