ASEAN Urbanist admires the 'lightning construction speed' of the APEC project in Phu Quoc

The ASEAN Urbanist page with nearly half a million followers has just 'taken off its hat' in admiration at the 'lightning construction speed' of the APEC 2027 project cluster that Sun Group is investing in and constructing on the pearl island of Phu Quoc.

In fact, there are few construction projects in Vietnam or the region that are being constructed at such a rapid pace.

Record speed in the aviation industry

Accordingly, although Phu Quoc International Airport has only started construction since July, items such as the construction of new runway No. 2, VIP terminal, and T2 passenger terminal are moving towards the finish line. Difficulties and problems have been basically resolved.

According to the construction unit representative, with a monthly rate of 700 large piles, by the end of November, Terminal T2 had completed 85% of the rough structure. The VIP Terminal had completed 100% of the rough structure and steel structure. Runway 2 had reached about 30% of the volume. After only four months of construction, the entire terminal block had been constructed to the 4th floor, aiming for completion in March 2027. The project is expected to be completed after only 18 months of construction, achieving a record speed in the aviation industry.

Phu Quoc Airport VIP Terminal

Compared to Changi Airport (Singapore), which took 6 years from the start of construction to its first operation (normally, large airport projects can take up to 10 years), it can be seen that this is a lightning-fast construction progress, helping the project to be operational in time to serve APEC 2027. And comparing the construction speed of Phu Quoc's APEC projects to the speed of light is completely reasonable.

It is known that the Phu Quoc International Airport expansion investment project has a total capital of nearly 22,000 billion VND, with an implementation period of 2025 - 2027. According to the approved plan, the airport will reach level 4E according to the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), allowing it to receive wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 747, 787 or Airbus A350. The project has a total area of ​​1,050 hectares, increasing the airport's operating capacity to 20 million passengers per year, 4.5 times the current capacity.

Changi Airport Group - the operator of Changi Airport - Singapore will be in charge of operational consulting. The airport applies the most modern technologies in the world , including a comprehensive operational model, a biometric system for seamless journeys - contactless, a modern baggage handling system, and automated parking technologies, underground refueling and remote-controlled telescopic tubes, aiming at the leading smart airport standards in the region, helping check-in time to only 15 - 20 seconds/person.

APEC Conference Center - new symbol of Phu Quoc

APEC Conference Center has rapid construction progress

Another key project that is also being focused on is the APEC Conference Center project, with a total investment of 21,860 billion VND. This is a symbolic project serving the national political and foreign affairs goals. The project has a scale of 16.06 hectares including APEC park, exhibition conference center and multi-purpose theater.

The overall progress of the two main items, the convention center and the multi-purpose theater, is maintained at about 33% of the total construction volume. In particular, the Convention Center in Sub-area S3 has completed 100% of the foundation and reached 31% of the rough construction. The absolute completion of the foundation is an important premise to ensure the technical aspects of the giant column-free structure. The Convention Center has a total floor area of ​​157,375 m ² , including 4 floors above ground and 1 basement. The highlight of the center is the 81m column-free ballroom with an area of ​​11,050 m ² , which is currently the largest in the world, surpassing Caesars Forum in Las Vegas.

Perspective of APEC Conference Center

Meanwhile, the completion level of the multi-purpose theater (Area S2) has also reached 95% of the foundation and 20.5% of the rough construction. Both items will complete the steel structure by January 31, 2026, the exterior by June 30, 2026 and the interior by January 31, 2027.

The multi-purpose theater has a roof area of ​​17,200 ^m2 , including 6 floors above ground and 1 basement with a capacity of 4,094 seats. The project was designed by leading American consulting units such as SOM and Apeiro in a circular shape - a symbol of Heaven, placed next to the square Convention Center - a symbol of Earth.

Construction progress of multi-purpose theater

Last November, after inspecting, checking and working with the People's Committee of An Giang province on the implementation of projects serving the APEC 2027 Conference, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung assessed: "With a huge amount of work, difficult weather, labor, construction and transportation conditions, the projects were carried out at an unprecedentedly fast pace... The two projects assigned to Sun Group were done very well. After 2 months of inspection, I was surprised", and expressed his confidence in the progress with the efforts of all agencies, including investors and contractors.

Important traffic projects are being implemented simultaneously to help Phu Quoc complete its infrastructure.

In addition to key projects, other projects that will be implemented in the coming time include: Provincial Road DT.975, 19.26 km long, 62m wide, at least 6 lanes, total investment of 1,632 billion VND; urban railway line with a length of about 18 km, connecting from Phu Quoc International Airport to APEC Conference Center, including 6 modern stations (1 underground, 5 above ground) ... are also about to be implemented, helping to complete the urban infrastructure picture for Phu Quoc, not only serving the APEC 2027 conference but also being a lever for this special zone to accelerate development in the new period.
