Should you wash your hair every day or every week? The answer will surprise you!

Washing your hair seems simple, but it actually depends on many factors such as hair type, age, and daily habits.

Just like skin, hair needs care tailored to each individual's needs. According to Dr. Shilpi Khetarpal, a dermatologist in the US, washing your hair every day isn't necessarily wrong, but it's not always necessary, especially for those with curly hair.

Washing your hair too often can weaken it, making it prone to breakage and stripping it of its natural moisture due to the use of too many cleansing products.

People with thin hair should wash their hair at least every other day. If you have an oily scalp and find it uncomfortable, you can wash it every day.

Here are some factors that can affect how often you wash your hair, according to the Cleveland Clinic .

Hair length

The longer your hair, the more prone it is to dryness if you wash it too often. The oil glands (sebaceous glands) in the scalp produce oil that needs time to spread down to the ends of the hair. Washing your hair too often removes this oil, leaving it frizzy and prone to breakage.

Hair type

People with thin, fine hair can wash their hair every other day. Those with thick, coarse hair only need to wash it once a week. Curly and dry hair tends to be harder to moisturize, so washing it less often is recommended.

In particular, hair that has been dyed, permed, or straightened is easily damaged and should not be washed too often.

According to Khetarpal, shampoo should only be used on the scalp, while conditioner should be applied from mid-length to ends to avoid dryness, breakage, or greasiness.

Age

As we age, our oil glands become less active, leading to drier hair. Postmenopausal women experience a decrease in androgens, hormones that control oil glands, making their hair even drier. Men also experience a similar condition over time.

Exercising a lot doesn't necessarily mean you need to wash your hair every day.

Exercising and sweating a lot aren't necessarily reasons to wash your hair every day. According to Khetarpal, you should maintain a consistent hair washing schedule, such as once a week, three times a week, or every two weeks, depending on your hair type.

If you feel you're washing your hair too often, you can try reducing the frequency by extending the time between washes by one day, or washing it less often each week. Initially, your hair might feel slightly greasy or itchy, but your scalp will gradually adjust.
