On December 13th, Vinh Duc General Hospital ( Da Nang City) announced that they had successfully performed a cesarean section on a pregnant woman at 34 weeks gestation with a transverse presentation, who was in critical condition due to severe preeclampsia.
Previously, the pregnant woman was admitted to the hospital with a spike in blood pressure of 220/120 mmHg, severe preeclampsia, a 34-week-old fetus in a transverse position at risk of premature birth, along with fetal growth restriction and gestational diabetes.
With extremely high blood pressure, the pregnant woman faced the risk of seizures, cerebral hemorrhage, and multiple organ failure; while the fetus could experience acute fetal distress at any time. Upon admission, the obstetricians activated the emergency protocol for severe preeclampsia, closely monitoring blood pressure, proteinuria, and fetal heart rate.

The baby girl, weighing 1.8 kg, was born healthy and crying loudly.
Initially, the patient responded to medication to reduce brain edema and lower blood pressure, and the team planned to extend the procedure to improve gestational age. However, the patient suddenly experienced pain at the site of her previous cesarean section and her water broke, forcing the doctors to decide on an emergency cesarean section.
The surgery was performed in coordination between the Obstetrics and Gynecology, Anesthesia and Resuscitation, and Neonatology departments. The baby girl, weighing 1.8 kg, was born safely, healthy, crying loudly, and received continuous neonatal resuscitation and Kangaroo care. By the afternoon of the same day, the baby was able to move, open her eyes, breastfeed, and have normal bowel and bladder function.
Currently, both mother and child are in stable condition and are being monitored at the hospital. According to doctors at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department (Vinh Duc General Hospital), this was a very complex cesarean section case, including severe preeclampsia, a previous cesarean scar, gestational diabetes, transverse fetal presentation, and a gestational age of only 34 weeks with a weight of 1.8 kg.
Doctors advise that preeclampsia is a dangerous condition, but it can be detected early if pregnant women have regular prenatal checkups and pay attention to warning signs such as high blood pressure, significant edema, headaches, dizziness, epigastric pain, or weak fetal movements. Early detection will significantly reduce the risk for both mother and fetus.
