Speaking with Tuoi Tre Online on the afternoon of December 8, the leader of Binh Duong General Hospital (HCMC) said that the pregnant woman LNP (20 years old) had her hand severed and was temporarily kept in her leg before successfully reattaching it on November 17. She has now safely given birth to twin boys.
Accordingly, when the pregnancy was over 35 weeks, the doctors performed a cesarean section on the morning of December 8, to the overwhelming joy of the team, the pregnant woman and her family. Currently, the mother and two boys are all healthy.
"The girl gave birth to two children and smiled happily, the grandmother cried... We kept our promise. This is the result of everyone's contribution," Dr. Vo Thai Trung - Deputy Head of Department, in charge of Orthopedic Trauma Department, Binh Duong General Hospital - shared on his personal Facebook page.
Previously in September, Ms. P. was admitted to Binh Duong General Hospital with a crushed lower third of her forearm and a severed right hand due to a work accident.
To save the hand, doctors decided to temporarily graft the hand onto the right leg. This is a high-tech technique in plastic surgery, requiring absolute precision to keep the tissue alive while waiting for the reattachment surgery.
On November 17, Ms. P. returned to the hospital in stable condition. Ultrasound showed that she was 34 weeks pregnant with twins, with a good fetal heart rate and normal amniotic fluid. Ms. P. wanted to have her hands reattached to restore her ability to function and care for her children after giving birth.
Realizing the special nature of the patient, Binh Duong General Hospital held an interdisciplinary consultation and remote consultation to seek professional guidance from leading hospitals.
During the surgery, the fetal heart rate was continuously monitored by an obstetric monitoring system to ensure maximum safety. The surgery lasted several hours and involved complex microsurgical techniques.
The surgical team performed a series of difficult techniques including: separating the hand from the leg and taking a 15cm long posterior tibial artery, preparing the forearm stump and combining the radius with a screw plate, connecting an artery and three veins to re-establish circulation in the hand, and grafting the lost tendon and nerve with the peroneal longus tendon and superficial peroneal nerve branch.
Immediately after surgery, the patient P.'s hands were warm and pink, with good blood circulation, SpO₂ at the fingertips of 98 - 100%. The patient was alert, able to eat and drink, and her fingers were able to move slightly according to physical therapy instructions. The twins were stable, with a regular fetal heart rate and no abnormalities were noted.
The success of the surgery has profound humanitarian significance.
With the outstanding achievements in the above surgery, the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City awarded certificates of merit to three groups (Binh Duong General Hospital, Department of Orthopedics and Trauma, Department of Surgery - Anesthesia and Resuscitation) and one individual, Dr. CKII Vo Thai Trung - Deputy Head of Department, in charge of the Department of Orthopedics and Trauma.
Mr. Tran Luu Quang - Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee - also sent a letter of commendation to the surgical team, recognizing their efforts, high sense of responsibility and smooth coordination between the specialties of Binh Duong General Hospital in the special surgery for a pregnant woman carrying twins.
The City leaders assessed this as a success of profound human significance, demonstrating the professional mettle, expertise and heart of the medical staff. The Secretary hopes that the team will continue to maintain their enthusiasm, promote their intelligence and skills, and constantly innovate to serve the people better and better.
