Vietnamese Archery and Shooting: Compete for the No. 1 position in Southeast Asia

Absent from the SEA Games due to the somewhat controversial regulations of the host country Cambodia, shooting was brought back to the list of events of the Games. This is an opportunity for the Vietnamese shooting team to repeat the achievement of winning 7 Gold Medals, thereby ranking No. 1 in the event as they did at the SEA Games held at home 3 years ago.

“From the beginning of the year, we have narrowed down 40 shooters. Up to now, 6 men's events, 8 women's events, 2 mixed team events of shooting and flying disc shooting events have all had the presence of high-class Vietnamese shooters. These include Trinh Thu Vinh, Le Thi Mong Tuyen, Pham Quang Huy, Ha Minh Thanh…”, coach Nghiem Viet Hung of the Vietnamese shooting team said. Shooters in the planning to compete for gold medals have also continuously participated in the Southeast Asian championship to Asia. At the regional arena held in Thailand last month, Vietnamese shooters ranked first in the whole group with 29 gold medals! This milestone is enough to help Vietnam gain more confidence when competing at the 33rd SEA Games.

It is known that the Vietnam shooting team decided to appoint coaches to closely monitor each event. This is to help shooters competing in their specialty events to be closely monitored and closely supervised. During this time, each coaching board of the Vietnam shooting team began to focus on increasing intensity, maintaining stability and accuracy in competition. In addition, shooters also got used to the actual conditions of light, noise and waiting time to shoot.

One detail that is beneficial for the women's pistol category is that recently, Trinh Thu Vinh and Nguyen Thuy Trang have been accompanied by Mongolian experts. "This is the category with the highest potential for competing for gold medals. We believe that with meticulous and careful training plans from Mongolian experts, Thu Vinh and Thuy Trang can bring glory to Vietnamese shooting," said Nghiem Viet Hung.

The coach in charge of the Vietnamese shooting team emphasized: “This is a sport in which Vietnam is always ranked at the top of the region. Maintaining our position and trying to win gold medals for the country’s sports is also a pressure that we need to try to overcome.”

Vietnamese archery determined to win 2-3 gold medals

Similar to shooting, the Vietnamese archery team also had its journey at the 32nd SEA Games interrupted. It had to wait until host Thailand added 10 sets of medals, including the single-string and triple-string bows in the individual, team and mixed team categories, to the competition list for archery to return to the Southeast Asian Games.

There is an interesting thing. Different from the modest achievement of only 4 silver medals and 1 bronze medal at the 31st SEA Games held at home, the Vietnamese archery team is confident of winning 2-3 gold medals in Thailand. Mr. Phan Trong Quan - in charge of Archery, Vietnam Sports Department said: "Vietnamese archery has made clear changes, improving its achievements in the international arena. The national team's athletes have gradually become younger to meet the big goals ahead such as ASIAD and Olympics. This is a good sign, showing that the sport is going in the right direction."

Mr. Quan continued: “At the 33rd SEA Games, Vietnam Archery confidently places its hopes on 16 quality athletes. Among them are Le Quoc Phong and Do Thi Anh Nguyet. In addition, the team is also waiting for the progress of young archers such as Le Pham Van Anh and Trieu Huyen Diep... The specific goal of the whole team is to win 2-3 gold medals in both single-string and triple-string bows.”

Recently, Vietnamese archery competed in the world tournament held in 3 countries including China, Spain and Korea. After that, Anh Nguyet and her teammates also participated in the Asian tournament and achieved commendable results. More importantly, based on these tournaments, the archers are aiming their arrows at... 2 targets. On the one hand, the athletes want to have more thorough preparation for the 33rd SEA Games. Furthermore, this is also a test of the performance and personnel calculation of the Vietnamese archery team towards the 20th ASIAD taking place next year.

According to the assessment of the Vietnamese archery team, Nguyen Thi Anh Nguyet is the archer with the highest chance of winning a gold medal. Expert Park Chae-soon emphasized that Anh Nguyet has significantly improved her ability to handle the wind, adjust the shooting angle and choose the right time to release the bow. In addition, she is also more confident when participating in the 2021 and 2024 Olympics.

Roll call of challenges for Vietnamese shooting
Indonesia is a strong competitor to Vietnam in shooting. The Secretary General of the Indonesian Shooting Federation, Mr. Nova Ismailiyanto, has set the target of the Indonesian team at 10-14 gold medals. Of which, 44 Indonesian shooters will compete in the following categories: 10m air pistol, 25m pistol, 50m rifle, flying disc shooting and practical shooting.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian shooting team is focusing its strongest force to aim for excellent results at the 33rd SEA Games. In total, 29 Malaysian shooters will compete in three categories: pistol, rifle and flying disc shooting. According to Team Leader Major Jasni Shaari, three veterans Johnathan Wong, Nur Suryani Mohamed Taibi and Alia Sazana Azahari are the biggest hopes. All three have competed at the Olympics and World Championships.
Female shooter Alia Sazana is also determined to win gold medal in the 25m pistol event, after winning silver medal at the 31st SEA Games in Hanoi .
