Vietnam University Rankings in the World 2026
Vietnam aims to have 8 universities in the top 200 in Asia, currently has 5, with positions 127-199, on two popular rankings today.
Resolution 71 of the Politburo on breakthroughs in education and training development sets the target of having at least eight higher education institutions among the top 200 universities in Asia. At the same time, by 2030, Vietnam will have at least one university in the world's top 100 in a number of fields, increasing to five by 2045.
According to some experts, this is a specific and bold goal, contributing to raising the reputation of Vietnamese higher education on the world map.
Currently, there are nearly 20 Vietnamese universities participating in two prestigious and large-scale rankings such as QS and Times Higher Education (THE) . This number increased nearly 10 times compared to 2018, when only Hanoi National University and Ho Chi Minh City National University participated.
With THE , schools are evaluated based on 18 criteria, divided into 5 groups, including: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, Industry, International Outlook. Each group of criteria accounts for 4-30% of the weight, with the most emphasis on research quality.
QS evaluates 9 criteria, of which academic reputation has the largest weight - 30%, followed by the number of citations (20%). The remaining criteria are school prestige, faculty/student ratio, internationality, international research network, employment outcomes and sustainability, accounting for 5-15%.
Due to different criteria, the rankings of Vietnamese universities on these two rankings are also different. The highest position currently is 127 in Asia, belonging to Duy Tan University, on the QS rankings in 2025. In the THE table, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics is ranked highest - 136 in Asia.

Oxford sets a record: 10 years firmly at the top of THE 2026 rankings
The Times Higher Education (THE) 2026 rankings have been officially announced, with the participation of 2,191 higher education institutions spanning 115 countries and territories. Once again, Oxford University (UK) has affirmed its "invincible" position by maintaining the global top position, marking a historic milestone: the 10th consecutive year the school has held the No. 1 position. This achievement is the clearest proof of the strength and stability of the research environment at Oxford.
Alongside the dominance of traditional powers like the US and UK—with familiar names like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Princeton University—this year's rankings have seen impressive moves from Asia.
China made a spectacular breakthrough, bringing five of its universities into the top 40 (a significant increase from three last year), consolidating its position on the world academic map.
India is not far behind, rising to become the country with the second highest number of ranked universities, only behind the "giant" America.
Hong Kong (China) continues to make a big splash when it has 6 excellent universities in the top 200 of THE 2026, demonstrating the region's outstanding educational quality.
Another notable highlight is the spectacular rise of Princeton University (USA). This school has risen to occupy the third position (shared with another university), showing the continuous improvement efforts in the American higher education system.
The 2026 THE rankings not only honor the top schools but also paint a panoramic picture of the shift in intellectual power around the world, with the strong rise of Asia alongside the stability of the West.
