Livelihood model, how to create momentum for members to escape poverty
In Bac Vong Tay village (Dan Dien commune), Ms. Tran Thi Lai (born in 1965) is one of the women in particularly difficult circumstances. Her husband and children are often sick, causing all the economic burden to fall on her shoulders. There was a time when she thought she could not escape the poverty that had haunted her for many years. Understanding Ms. Lai's situation, the Women's Union of Dan Dien commune supported her with preferential loans to raise sows, and also provided breeding chickens and animal feed to help her earn a living. From those initial sources of capital and breeding chickens, Ms. Lai worked diligently, selling 3 batches of chickens and pigs each year. Not only did she work hard at raising animals, she also took advantage of fertilizers to grow crops, earning additional income from agriculture.
Looking back on the past, she emotionally shared: “Thanks to the Women's Union of the commune, I have a support. They came to my house to encourage me, guide me on how to raise animals, and remind me every little thing. Having a job and a stable income, I have escaped poverty and am able to take care of my family.”
Also in Dan Dien commune, Tran Thi Tinh and her husband (Bac Vong Dong village) are both in poor health and cannot do heavy work, but they have to take care of their two children going to school. In response to her situation, the Commune Women's Union gave them chickens, animal feed, and technical guidance so that they could work right at home. Thanks to a suitable source of livelihood, Tinh's family economy has gradually become more stable, with more income to cover their living expenses and pay for their children's education.
Ms. Tran Thi Bich Ngoc, Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee (VFF) of the commune, Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Dan Dien commune said: "We determined that support must be appropriate to the needs and at the right time. Some households need capital, some need breeding stock, some need techniques. This approach to meeting practical needs has helped many members confidently escape poverty. In 2025 alone, the Women's Union of the commune helped 32 members escape poverty."
Mastering the economy
Ms. Pham Thi Hong, a member of Van Duong Branch, Vy Da Ward Women's Union, was also a poor household. When she wanted to develop her economy but did not have enough capital, Ms. Hong was guided by the Ward Women's Union to complete preferential loan procedures. When she had capital, she started raising poultry and doing small business. After a while, her family's economy gradually stabilized. Not only did she escape poverty, Ms. Hong also became a typical example in the women's movement to develop the economy of the ward.
Ms. Hong confided: “With capital, I was accompanied and guided by the Women's Union, thanks to that I was bold enough to start a business when I was no longer young. But it was that boldness that helped me change and take control of my economy as I am now.”
Ms. Ngo Ngoc Khanh, Vice President of the Women's Union of Vy Da Ward, said: To improve the lives of women members and reduce poverty sustainably, the Women's Union of the ward has supported and encouraged women members to be creative, start businesses, and develop the economy. At the same time, it has promoted support for women to access loan capital; organized training courses to improve knowledge on capital management and use, and knowledge of transferring science and technology; mobilized and supported members and women to boldly start businesses. The Women's Union of the ward has done a good job of loan management, continued to effectively implement the program of signing a joint trust loan agreement with the Bank for Social Policies, and at the same time maintained and managed well the capital of the Southeast Asia Commercial Joint Stock Bank ( SeAbank ). Currently, the Women's Union of the ward has supported 150 members with interest-free loans to develop the family economy with a total budget of 750 million VND. Total outstanding loan balance entrusted to the Social Policy Bank to date is 42 billion VND with 2,150 households borrowing from 26 loan groups; SeAbank capital is nearly 2 billion VND with 87 loan members.
Providing the right support and long-term support is the way that the Women's Union at all levels has persistently implemented to help members become self-sufficient and escape poverty in recent times. In particular, creating sustainable livelihoods, connecting to markets, transferring technology and expanding access to capital have contributed to helping women become independent, confident and self-reliant.
From small models at the grassroots level such as raising piggy banks to create a fund for members to borrow without interest for small businesses; building funds, connecting to create a source of livelihood for members to have stable jobs, to larger movements such as borrowing capital to start a business, starting a business... all have the same goal: to help women have the opportunity to change their lives with their own hands.
With the spirit of solidarity and creative ways, suitable for each association, the City Women's Union always accompanies women, especially poor and disadvantaged women, so that no one is left behind on the journey to escape poverty and build a prosperous and sustainable life.
Ms. Tran Thi Kim Loan, Vice Chairwoman of the City Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, Chairwoman of the Hue City Women's Union, said: "Poverty reduction for women is not only about economic support but also about creating confidence for them to dare to change. During the past term, the Women's Union branches across the city have supported 1,794 women's households to escape poverty, exceeding the set target. Hundreds of livelihood models have been formed and are increasingly effective. This is a clear demonstration of the responsible and persistent participation of the union at all levels." |
