Bao Ha focuses on developing OCOP products

In recent years, Bao Ha commune has focused on exploiting the advantages of climate, land and traditional occupations to develop typical agricultural products associated with the “One Commune One Product” Program – OCOP. Many effective production models have created stable livelihoods, increased income for people and built the brand of local agricultural products.

Starting beekeeping in 2008, from a household scale to a business, up to now Thanh Xuan Mountain Bee Development Company Limited, Bao Ha commune is maintaining over 700 bee colonies, regularly traveling to many provinces and cities to find honey sources. Thanks to proactive raw material sources, the company has brought to the market many products with high nutritional value such as royal jelly honey, pure honey, peach lemon honey, ginger honey, pollen, royal jelly...

Currently, the company has 7 products, of which 5 products achieve 4-star OCOP, the remaining products achieve 3 stars.

On average, each year, the company supplies the market with about 30 tons of honey, more than 2 tons of pollen and 200 kg of royal jelly, earning hundreds of millions of VND. The company also creates stable jobs for more than 30 local workers with an income of 4-6 million VND/person/month.

The company director, Mr. Pham Thanh Xuan, said that the company is always proactive in meeting market tastes. In addition to improving product quality, the company focuses on investing in beautiful designs, packaging, and diverse capacities to make it suitable for gifts, making the product more accessible to customers.

One honey product but must be processed into many types. Same pure honey but can add lemon, ginger, pollen or royal jelly. We have to supply whatever type customers like; the important thing is to understand what the market needs.

The craft of making gai cakes and rom cakes in Bao Ha commune has also developed strongly in recent years and is popular with consumers. Previously, people mainly made them for their families, but Mrs. Vu Thi Sang’s family has boldly turned the traditional products into local specialties.

For more than ten years maintaining the production facility, Ms. Sang has still maintained the distinctive flavor thanks to the careful processing process: ramie leaves are dried thoroughly, simmered and then finely ground; the cake flour is completely made from upland sticky rice to make the cake crust soft and fragrant. To proactively source raw materials, her family has dedicated the entire agricultural land to grow ramie trees for leaves, ensuring stable quality.

Maintaining traditional processing methods, combined with strict compliance with food hygiene and safety regulations, helps the Cong Sang sticky rice cake and sticky rice cake brand develop sustainably. Thanks to that, the family's products have achieved 3-star OCOP certification and are trusted by customers inside and outside the province.

Ms. Vu Thi Sang said: Since having the brand with 3-star OCOP, the family's cake output has increased 3-4 times compared to before. Many regular customers at home and abroad have ordered to send abroad.

Previously, the facility only made about 50 - 100 cakes per day, now it has increased to 200 - 700 cakes; during peak seasons it can be up to thousands of cakes, meeting the growing demand of the market.

Along with traditional products, crop conversion in Bao Ha also brings about clear economic efficiency. Many areas previously planted with corn and cassava have been converted to grow bananas - a type of plant suitable for the soil conditions, bringing in 4 - 5 times higher income than the old crop.

The family of Mr. Le Hoang Sao, in Con 1 village, is one of the pioneers. He shared: Before growing corn, now they have switched to growing bananas, which brings in higher income. Currently, the family has used all the land to grow bananas and is looking to rent more land from households working far away to expand the area.

Royal bananas have been planted in Bao Ha commune for nearly 20 years. From a few experimental planting households, the commune's total area has now reached nearly 40 hectares, with an output of about 40 tons/month. To support consumption, the commune has mobilized the establishment of the Hong Cam Royal Banana Cooperative to purchase and find a stable outlet for the product.

Director of Hong Cam Royal Banana Cooperative, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Hung, said: We grow and purchase bananas from people in the commune and neighboring areas. After purchasing, the cooperative packages and brings them to supermarkets in Hanoi for consumption.

The cooperative currently has 10 members and a banana growing area of over 10 hectares. Fresh royal banana products achieve 4-star OCOP, dried banana products achieve 3-star OCOP; the unit is developing additional banana starch products to diversify its products.

Bao Ha commune currently has 20 OCOP products, of which Thanh Xuan honey, royal banana, gai cake, seedless persimmons and cinnamon products stand out. Developing OCOP products not only increases the value of agricultural products but also contributes to building local brands.

Mr. Tran Trung Kien - Chairman of Bao Ha Commune People's Committee, said: OCOP products help build brands, improve quality and support consumption for people. In the coming time, we will continue to improve product quality from 4 stars to 5 stars, expand production areas to proactively source materials, and create more products.

With the support of the government and the efforts of the people, Bao Ha's OCOP products are gradually affirming their position in the market, actively contributing to poverty reduction, rural economic development and building local agricultural product brands.
