CNN reported on June 27 that the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office (Texas, USA) stated that the ground staff member at San Antonio International Airport who was sucked into an aircraft engine and died did so by suicide.
The cause of death in the June 23 incident was determined to be the impact of blunt and sharp objects. The victim is believed to have committed suicide, according to an office assistant.
Delta Air Lines flight 1111 from Los Angeles, California, to San Antonio, Texas, was taxiing to its destination when a ground crew member was sucked into the engine in the incident that occurred at approximately 10:25 p.m.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is gathering relevant information, while airport management is cooperating with the investigating authorities.
The unnamed employee works for Unifi Aviation, a company contracted by Delta Airlines to handle ground operations.
KENS5, citing information from Delta Airlines, reported that the company is "deeply saddened" by the incident and "is cooperating with authorities as they begin their investigation."
Unifi Aviation described the incident as a "catastrophic accident." "Our initial investigation indicates that this incident was not related to Unifi's operating procedures, safety, or policies," the company stated.
On June 21, Piedmont Airlines (USA) was fined $15,625 by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in connection with the death of a ground staff member last year in a similar incident.
"Proper training and the implementation of safety procedures could have prevented this tragedy," an OSHA official said.
