Trends in non-invasive treatments
According to the Vietnam Society of Anorectal Diseases, anorectal diseases are among the most common illnesses in modern life. Several studies indicate that colorectal cancer currently accounts for 10% of all cancers; hemorrhoids affect over 50% of the population; anal fistulas affect more than 25%; fecal incontinence affects over 24%; anal pain affects 4-18%; and chronic constipation affects 14-28%.

The diagnostic and treatment techniques for anorectal diseases performed by doctors in the country have yielded high success rates.

Most anorectal diseases (excluding cancer) in their early stages are not life-threatening, but they cause pain and discomfort, directly affecting health and daily life. If not detected early, diagnosed correctly, and treated promptly, the disease will develop into serious and dangerous complications.
Regarding the effectiveness and progress in treating anorectal diseases, Associate Professor Dr. Le Manh Cuong, President of the Vietnam Society of Anorectal Surgery and Director of Tue Tinh Hospital ( Hanoi ), stated that anorectal diseases are now effectively treated by combining modern and traditional medicine, including internal medicine, surgery, procedures, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation. Many modern diagnostic tools are applied to detect anorectal diseases early: endoscopic ultrasound, computed tomography, abdominal and pelvic MRI, and anorectal manometry…
According to representatives from the Department of Anorectal and Pelvic Floor Surgery at the Central Military Hospital 108, the department has successfully researched and applied sphincter preservation techniques for patients with low rectal cancer, enabling natural bowel movements; treated cancer using multimodal methods based on guidelines from the Japanese and American Cancer Societies; and implemented many new (minimally invasive) techniques in treating anorectal diseases such as laser treatment for hemorrhoids and fistulas, and methods for treating rectal prolapse, constipation, and urinary incontinence.
In particular, Associate Professor Dr. Le Manh Cuong stated that minimally invasive techniques and procedures have been applied to minimize pain and shorten recovery time for patients, including: endoscopic surgery and robotic surgery to remove polyps and colorectal tumors; using argon plasma for hemostasis and treatment of mucosal lesions; using laser to reduce the size of hemorrhoids; rubber band ligation; radiofrequency ablation and direct electrical pulse hemorrhoid removal; treatment of hemorrhoids with infrared photocoagulation and sclerotherapy…
Non-invasive treatment solutions for anorectal diseases tend to account for the majority, reaching up to 90%, and even exceeding 90%.
To prevent anorectal diseases, doctors advise people to eat foods high in fiber and green vegetables, drink plenty of water, avoid straining during bowel movements, avoid sitting for long periods, and exercise regularly.
Anal canal necrosis due to self-treatment.
"When sick, many people are hesitant to see a doctor or try to find remedies and buy medicine online to treat their illness, which can worsen the condition. This is extremely dangerous, as we have encountered many cases of self-treatment based on online information leading to serious complications. In some cases, there has been necrosis of the entire anal canal, requiring surgery, and even the creation of an artificial anus," said Associate Professor Dr. Le Manh Cuong.
"Based on scientific reports, we now have, for the first time, guidelines for treating hemorrhoids, combining modern and traditional medicine. The Vietnam Society of Anorectal Surgery will also widely disseminate information and recommendations to the public on disease prevention as well as methods and advancements in treatment. At the same time, we will bring these techniques to medical facilities, closer to the community, especially to remote and rural areas," Associate Professor Cuong said.
The 11th National Scientific Conference, organized by the Vietnam Society of Anorectal Surgery on October 19th in Hanoi, was attended by experts and specialist doctors from across the country.
At the conference, experts presented and discussed the latest research, results of advanced technical applications, and experiences in the diagnosis and treatment of anorectal diseases, including updates on the diagnosis and treatment of hemorrhoids. There were also in-depth reports on: laparoscopic rectal resection via the anus, robotic laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer, and immunotherapy – a new trend in rectal cancer treatment…
