Baby C. has had severe Thalassemia since 6 months old and has had to undergo regular blood transfusions. Through testing, the baby has a compatible HLA 11/12 with his mother. On August 11, 2025, the transplant was performed with the support of Italian experts.
Unlike the usual practice of separating red blood cells, the hospital applies the immune tolerance technique of gradually infusing the donor's blood so that the recipient's body can adapt, and then infusing stem cells. This method is both cost-effective and preserves the maximum number of cells.
During the transplant, the patient experienced complications of infection, bladder bleeding, and mild rejection. After 20 to 24 days, blood parameters recovered. On the 28th day, the patient was discharged from the hospital in good health.
Since September 2024, Hue Central Hospital has performed 11 allogeneic stem cell transplants for Thalassemia patients. The unit has also just opened a new transplant room, preparing to perform half-compatible transplants to expand the chances of survival for many children with this disease.
