Hue Central Hospital: First successful hematopoietic stem cell transplant from biological mother, incompatible blood type

On the afternoon of September 8, Hue Central Hospital held a discharge ceremony for patient Vu Quynh C. (6 years old, Bac Ninh), after a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (bone marrow transplant) to treat Thalassemia. This is the first time in Vietnam that a transplant from a biological mother with incompatible blood types has been successfully performed.

Baby C. has been suffering from severe Thalassemia since he was 6 months old and has had to undergo regular blood transfusions. Through testing, he has been found to be compatible with his mother's HLA 11/12. On August 11, 2025, the transplant was performed with the assistance of Italian experts.

Unlike the usual practice of separating red blood cells, the hospital applies the immune tolerance technique of gradually transfusing the donor's blood so that the recipient's body can adapt, and then transfusing stem cells. This method is both cost-effective and preserves the maximum number of cells.

During the transplant, the patient experienced complications of infection, bladder bleeding, and mild rejection. After 20 to 24 days, blood parameters recovered. On the 28th day, the patient was discharged from the hospital in good health.

Since September 2024, Hue Central Hospital has performed 11 allogeneic stem cell transplants for Thalassemia patients. The unit has also just opened a new transplant room, preparing to perform half-compatible transplants to expand the chances of survival for many children with this disease.
