On November 24th, Dr. Nguyen Duc Cuong, Director of the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital in Dong Hoi ( Quang Binh province ), announced that doctors had successfully performed surgery to close a cranial fistula caused by chopsticks piercing from the nose to the brain of a 35-year-old man, saving the patient's life.
Accordingly, patient PVT (born in 1988, residing in Bo Trach district, Quang Binh province) was brought to the emergency room at Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital in Dong Hoi by his family in a state of headache, vision loss, and excessive discharge from the nose and throat.
The chopsticks were removed from Mr. T's body after surgery. |
According to the patient's family, about five months ago, while drinking alcohol, Mr. T. got into an altercation with someone else and sustained injuries. He was taken to the emergency room, but no abnormalities were found in his nose, and he only received medical treatment before returning home.
Recently, Mr. T. felt an itch in his nose, so he used tweezers to remove a foreign object and was surprised to find that the large object inside was a pair of chopsticks.
A CT scan of Mr. T's brain revealed broken chopsticks. |
Mr. T's family took him to the Vietnam-Cuba Hospital (Dong Hoi) for emergency treatment. After examination and a CT scan of the brain, doctors noted intracranial pneumothorax. Following a consultation, the medical team decided to perform endoscopic surgery through the nose combined with microsurgery to close the cranial fistula.
The patient's health is currently stable, and they are continuing rehabilitation treatment while awaiting discharge.
According to Dr. Nguyen Van Man, Head of the Neurosurgery Department at the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital in Dong Hoi, this is considered a rare case. Doctors had to carefully consider and choose the optimal surgical method to avoid leaving any sequelae for the patient.
