Enhancing the role of trade unions in building a modern working class.

According to Ms. Thai Thi Mai, Vice President in charge of the Son La Provincial Federation of Labor, in order to build a modern working class, the Vietnam Trade Union organization needs to have a sufficiently strong legal and practical position, not just limited to the role of mobilizing movements, but truly protecting the legitimate rights and interests of workers.

Ms. Thai Thi Mai, Vice President in charge of the Son La Provincial Labor Union (second from the right), visits and inquires about the well-being of workers in Son La province.

In its contribution to the draft documents for the 14th National Congress of the Party, the Son La Provincial Federation of Labor proposed clarifying and elevating the representative role of trade unions in the context of increasingly diverse and complex labor relations. Accordingly, trade unions need to be defined as representative organizations with sufficient courage, capacity, and mechanisms to fulfill their function of caring for and protecting workers.

The draft document for the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam identifies one of its tasks as building a modern Vietnamese working class, strong in both quantity and quality, with firm political resolve, and playing a leading role in the revolutionary cause through the Communist Party of Vietnam . Based on this, the Son La Provincial Federation of Labor believes that, along with building a modern working class, it is necessary to add the content of building a modern trade union organization, linked to the innovation of organizational models, operating methods, and the application of digital technology.

The Son La Provincial Federation of Labor Unions proposed specifying mechanisms for trade unions to exercise their right to supervise and provide social feedback on the implementation of policies and laws related to workers, in order to increase democracy and effectiveness in practice.

Regarding solutions, trade unions should focus on innovating the content and form of their activities to attract members, especially young workers; promote the application of technology in management and communication; care for the material and spiritual lives of workers through trade union institutions; and coordinate training to improve skills, legal knowledge, and abilities for workers.

In addition, enhancing collective bargaining capacity, strengthening legal advice and support, and building political fortitude and class consciousness among workers are also emphasized, in order to meet the development requirements of the new phase.
