Against the less-fancied Hong Kong team, coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet did not field his "aces" Tran Thi Bich Tuyen and Tran Thi Thanh Thuy from the start. Captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy had not fully recovered from her injury, while Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen had just played from the group stage to the final of the VTV9-Binh Dien International Women's Volleyball Tournament with LPBank Ninh Binh Club.
The Vietnamese women's volleyball team easily won their opening match at the AVC Challenge Cup 2024.
Setter Doan Thi Lam Oanh, libero Nguyen Khanh Dang, middle blocker Dinh Thi Tra Giang, along with young hitters Pham Thi Hien, Nguyen Tra My, Vi Thi Nhu Quynh, and Tran Tu Linh were given the opportunity to start. The Vietnamese women's volleyball team quickly demonstrated the strength of the defending champions, creating a dominant game and attacking effectively from multiple positions to consistently lead their opponents. Midway through the first set, coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet rotated the lineup, bringing in Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen and setter Kim Thoa. Bich Tuyen immediately showcased her talent with thunderous spikes, helping the Vietnamese women's volleyball team win convincingly 25/13 against Hong Kong.
The second set unfolded similarly to the first, with the Vietnamese team maintaining a dominant position against Hong Kong. In this set, libero Le Thi Yen was brought in to replace Khanh Dang. Midway through the set, Bich Tuyen and Hoang Thi Kieu Trinh also entered the game, further strengthening Vietnam's attack and securing a 25/17 victory. This was also a set where the Hong Kong girls put in a more determined effort, scoring several points more impressively than in the first set.
The Vietnamese women's volleyball team made further rotations in their lineup when Le Thanh Thuy and Nguyen Thi Trinh were brought onto the court in the third set. This was also the set where the Hong Kong team created a back-and-forth battle with the Vietnamese girls in the first half. Then, Le Thanh Thuy, Kieu Trinh, Bich Tuyen, and Nguyen Thi Trinh played brilliantly, helping the Vietnamese women's volleyball team win 25/16, securing a 3-0 victory overall. Although she didn't play much on the court, Bich Tuyen was the top scorer against Hong Kong, giving her a truly joyful 24th birthday.
A relatively easy victory against world- ranked 67th Hong Kong helped the Vietnamese women's volleyball team (world-ranked 40th) share first place in Group B with Kazakhstan, who also had an easy 3-0 win against Singapore in their opening match. At 3 PM tomorrow (May 23rd), the Vietnamese women's volleyball team will play their second Group B match against Singapore.
