Cambodia withdraws all sports from SEA Games 33

(Dan Tri) - Thai press reported that the Cambodian sports delegation decided to withdraw from all of its competitions at the 33rd SEA Games. Chairman of the 33rd SEA Games Council, Chaipak Siriwat, confirmed this.

On the evening of December 9th, the Cambodian delegation still participated in the parade at the opening ceremony of the 33rd SEA Games held in Bangkok, Thailand. However, by this morning (December 10th), many reports indicated that the delegation had decided to withdraw from all events at the Games.

According to Thailand's Daily News, the Cambodian sports delegation has withdrawn all its members from the 33rd SEA Games. The newspaper also reported that the Cambodian team was very impressed with Thailand's hospitality, and their withdrawal was regrettable.

It is understood that the Cambodian delegation will make an official announcement to the SEA Games 33 Organizing Committee today.

Therefore, if Cambodia withdraws, the 33rd SEA Games will once again be disrupted in terms of organization, schedule, and many other issues. Currently, representatives of the host country Thailand's organizing committee have not commented on this matter.

Previously, on November 26th, the Cambodian Olympic Committee (NOCC) sent a letter to the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) and the SEA Games 33 Organizing Committee (THASOC), stating its withdrawal from eight sports: football, sepak takraw, petanque, wrestling, judo, karate, pencak silat, and wushu.

With this announcement, Cambodia will continue to participate in 13 other sports, including swimming, athletics, esports, fencing, gymnastics, jujitsu, kickboxing, taekwondo, equestrianism, jetskiing, triathlon, teqball, and volleyball.

Cambodia’s withdrawal from many sports just days before the 33rd SEA Games kicks off could cause the tournament to face many difficulties in scheduling matches. Especially in men’s football, after U22 Cambodia withdrew from the SEA Games, there were only 2 teams left in Group A: host Thailand and Timor Leste, forcing the Organizing Committee to move the U22 Singapore team from Group C.
