As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly smarter, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella believes that humans cannot rely solely on their intellect to achieve success at work.

In a recent conversation with Mathias Döpfner, CEO of media conglomerate Axel Springer, Nadella said that emotional intelligence (EQ) is becoming increasingly important in the workplace, as AI takes on more specialized tasks.

Speaking on a recent episode of Döpfner's "MD Meets" podcast, the Microsoft chief said that while IQ does matter, it's not the only factor needed in today's world . Nadella emphasized the point that, at least for leaders, having IQ without EQ is a waste of intelligence.

Mr. Nadella further emphasized that social intelligence also plays a key role, reaffirming the view that empathy is a core business skill, not simply a soft skill.

When asked by Döpfner if the emphasis on empathy was the reason Microsoft was requiring employees to return to the office early next year, Nadella explained that in the age of AI, it is more important to recognize the role of human-to-human collaboration, and he sees the office environment as the best tool to promote that. However, the CEO also expressed that he did not want to be too rigid in enforcing these mandatory return-to-work regulations.

Microsoft has laid off thousands of workers this year, as the company increases scrutiny of employee performance.

In addition, according to documents obtained by Business Insider, Mr. Nadella has just carried out a restructuring of the leadership apparatus to increase Microsoft's competitiveness in the AI race.

Notably, in an internal announcement in November, he appointed Mr. Rolf Harms – the “hero” who helped Microsoft dominate the cloud computing sector – to the position of AI economics advisor.

Through the establishment of a new super-intelligence team, the corporation is ambitiously conquering artificial general intelligence (AGI), a technology expected to surpass human capabilities in a series of complex tasks./.
