By growing sweet cabbage and especially purslane and wild vegetables (forest vegetables) hydroponically, Mr. Tran Thanh Vu - in Duong To commune (Phu Quoc city, Kien Giang province) - earns an attractive profit of nearly 500 million VND per year.

On October 17th, according to Tuoi Tre Online , inside the greenhouse were sweet cabbage, chives, purslane, and wild spinach, all grown by Mr. Vu. hydroponics The plants are growing well and are ready for harvest to be taken to An Thoi market (An Thoi ward) for sale.
Mr. Vu said that it stemmed from the reality of the local people and tourists Because he prefers clean vegetables, he boldly utilized his family's vacant land to build greenhouses for hydroponic vegetable cultivation. To date, he owns four greenhouses with an area of approximately 4,000 square meters . (There are two greenhouses used for growing tomatoes, cucumbers, etc.).
"I sell cabbage, purslane, chives, and other leafy greens continuously throughout the year, supplying the market with an average of 800kg to 1 ton of various vegetables per month," Mr. Vu happily said.
Initially, when investing in greenhouses and growing organic vegetables on the island, Mr. Vu faced many difficulties regarding market access. In addition, the weather also posed challenges. Phu Quoc Sometimes it gets very sunny and hot, so he used additional shade nets and designed a misting irrigation system to cool and stabilize the temperature so that the vegetables could grow well.
Chinese cabbage, purslane, and other leafy greens are currently sold by Mr. Vu for 25,000-35,000 VND/kg (depending on the type), which is 5,000-10,000 VND/kg higher than vegetables grown using conventional methods. Therefore, after deducting production costs, Mr. Vu earns a profit of approximately 40 million VND/month (estimated at nearly 500 million VND/year).

Investing in greenhouses is expensive (around 700 million VND - over 1 billion VND per greenhouse), but the advantage is that Mr. Vu has less work to do; the vegetables are less damaged by pests, grow well, and fetch a good price.
Therefore, he plans to invest in more greenhouses to grow a wider variety of vegetables to supply the An Thoi and Duong Dong markets (Phu Quoc City), serving the culinary needs of locals and tourists.
Mr. Le Dinh Quang, chairman of the Phu Quoc City Farmers' Association, said that Mr. Vu's model of growing hydroponic vegetables in greenhouses has been highly effective, especially the cultivation of purslane and wild vegetables, which are popular among locals, contributing to high economic profits and stable family life. This also contributes to supplying clean vegetables to meet the needs of people on the island.
