It certainly took BMW some time to come up with a competitor to the Mercedes-Benz GLS (formerly known as the GL), but it finally entered the segment seven years ago with the first X7. The brand’s flagship SUV went into production in December 2018 and officially debuted in the US. Beneath the handsome exterior is a familiar platform. It’s the brand’s CLAR platform, shared with the smaller X6 and X5, as well as the 7 Series, 8 Series, and M Division’s standalone XM. Speaking of M Division, you should know they haven’t made a dent in the BMW X7, and judging by what they’ve shown, they don’t seem to intend to.
Normally, this would be a huge hurdle, but then there’s Alpina, which offers the XB7 version of the X7, which is essentially an unofficial X7 M. It has a revised chassis, sportier looks, some interior tweaks, and a set of Alpina-exclusive wheels that look great on any BMW, old or new. The highlight of the car is the familiar 4.4-liter twin-turbo engine. The V8 is none other than the S68, and in the Alpina XB7 it produces 613 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. The car hits 62 and 124 mph (100 and 200 km/h) in 4.2 and 14.8 seconds, respectively, and can maintain a top speed of 180 mph (290 km/h). The Alpina XB7 will compete with the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63, which is also equipped with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. The flagship super crossover from the Affalterbach sub-brand accelerates from 0-62 mph in 4.2 seconds, the same as the XB7, and has 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque.
The starting price of this model in the United States is $151,050, while the starting price of the 2026 Alpina XB7 is $157,175. In addition to the Alpina XB7, the BMW X7 also comes in M60i and xDrive40i versions. The M60i version has 523 horsepower, starting at $113,900, and the xDrive40i version has 375 horsepower, starting at $86,700. The Alpina XB7 featured in this article has a Sapphire Black exterior and an Ivory White cabin. It also has 23-inch alloy wheels with a distinctive Alpina design, a piano finish with silver logo, many Alpina details inside and out, Sport+ mode, sports suspension, Lavalina steering wheel, illuminated door sills, a panoramic glass sunroof and a Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system. The list doesn't stop there, as the car also comes with ambient lighting, ventilated seats, heated seats, a charcoal Alcantara headliner, massage seats for the driver and front passenger, a head-up display, LED headlights, illuminated kidney grilles, soft-close doors, and a host of other safety features.
The range is just 30 miles (50 km), so this Alpina XB7 is all-new, and part of a facelift that features split headlights and more. The Alpina XB7 featured in this article currently has a asking price of 221,935 Euros, equivalent to 257,320 USD. This makes it nearly twice as expensive as a standard new BMW X7 luxury SUV.
