President Trump's first 'victory' in the fight to deport illegal immigrants

At noon on January 27 (Vietnam time), the White House announced that the US would stop raising tariffs and embargoes after Colombia made concessions and allowed US military planes carrying illegal immigrants to land in the country.

Colombia has agreed to accept its citizens deported from the United States on military flights, the White House said, after President Donald Trump threatened to punish the South American country if it refused, Reuters reported on January 27.

In an official statement, the White House said Colombia agreed to "immediately and unrestrictedly accept all Colombian illegal immigrants departing the United States, including those on U.S. military flights."

According to The Hill , White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that based on the new agreement, the US will stop embargoes and impose 25% tariffs on goods coming from South America's fourth largest economy .

Meanwhile, the suspension of issuing US visas at the embassy in Bogota will continue until the first flight carrying deported Colombians is completed.

Hours earlier, Colombian President Gustavo Petro refused to allow military planes carrying illegal Colombian immigrants to land at the country's airports.

Mr. Petro agreed to take back immigrants deported by the US but "with dignity," such as through civilian flights rather than military planes from the US.

President Petro's statement angered President Trump. The new White House owner emphasized that he would begin retaliation by imposing a 25% tariff on Colombian products, which would increase to 50% in a week.

Mr. Trump also announced that he was immediately revoking visas for Colombian government officials as well as "supporters" of President Petro, and subjecting Colombians to increased surveillance at airports.

After the White House updated new information, the Colombian government briefly announced that it had overcome the deadlock in the illegal immigration dispute with the US, AFP reported.

"We will continue to take back deported Colombians," AFP quoted Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo at a press conference in Bogota.
