According to the Guardian , the Trump administration’s hardline policies, including tariffs and deportations and detentions at the border, are taking a heavy toll on the US tourism industry. Many international tourists have canceled their plans to visit the US because of hostility and a sense of insecurity.

According to US government data, international arrivals to the US in March fell 11.6% from a year earlier, with arrivals from Western Europe down 17.2%. The situation is expected to worsen as detentions and deportations have been widely reported since mid-March.

In particular, the number of tourists from Canada - who are upset with Mr. Trump's statements regarding Canada as the "51st state" - led the decline, causing major Canadian airlines to cut flights to the US.

In addition, European countries such as the UK, Germany and Spain have updated travel advisories for citizens traveling to the US, further reducing the number of visitors.

Adam Sacks, president of tourism research group Tourism Economics, said the current situation was the complete opposite of his initial prediction of a 9% increase.

He even predicts that international arrivals to the US will fall by up to 12% in 2025, resulting in a loss of about $10 billion, with widespread impacts across a wide range of industries, from entertainment to retail, travel to restaurants.

Popular destinations like New York and Los Angeles have seen sharp declines in hotel and attraction bookings. In New York, ticket sales to the Statue of Liberty are down 6%, and hotel bookings for the end of the year are down 20%.

Sacks said that not only international visitors, but also domestic tourists are expected to decline due to the impact of Mr. Trump's trade war, which has caused the cost of living to increase and disposable income to decrease. A survey showed that 80% of Americans may change their travel habits due to the gloomy economy .

Despite this, Mr. Trump still declared that the decrease in visitors is "not a big deal" and affirmed that the US is still the "tourism capital of the world." However, according to experts, both Democratic and Republican states will be heavily affected because international tourism plays an important role in the economies of many states such as Florida, Texas, California and New York.
