Researchers in China have just announced the successful manufacture of the world's first optical chip capable of processing hundreds of light data channels in parallel, achieving a performance of up to 2,560 TOPS. With a processing speed of 50 GHz, this chip is considered to be close to the power of today's most advanced graphics processors.

Meteor-1 optical chip – a new technological breakthrough.

Unlike conventional electronic chips, optical chips use light to transmit and process data, thereby providing low latency, energy savings, and superior concurrency. Instead of relying on clock speed increases or physical architecture expansion, the new solution utilizes optical transmission to process data on more than 100 separate channels at the same time.

This is the first time an optical chip has achieved practical performance that can be applied to intensive AI tasks such as computer vision, big data analytics, and deep learning. The high performance and low power consumption make this technology a potential choice for data centers, edge devices, next-generation networks, and many other industrial fields.

The event also represents a significant step forward in efforts to develop independent semiconductor technology, especially as the global market faces limits on transistor miniaturization and the growing power consumption of electronic chips.

While there are still challenges related to manufacturing costs, system integration and scalability, parallel optical chips will be a key enabler of the next generation of AI – faster, more efficient and more flexible in increasingly complex technological environments.
