RT reported that the US has put the restoration of normal relations with Russia and a quick end to the conflict in Ukraine at the heart of its newly released National Security Strategy, considering both goals as core US interests.
The White House released a 33-page report on December 5 outlining President Donald Trump's foreign policy vision.
“A core US interest is to negotiate a swift ceasefire in Ukraine to stabilize the European economy , prevent an unintended escalation or expansion of the war, and restore strategic stability with Russia,” the document states.

The report also noted that the conflict in Ukraine had “made relations between Europe and Russia… worse,” destabilizing the region, and criticized European leaders for “unrealistic expectations” about the outcome of the conflict.
“The United States is prepared to engage in significant diplomacy to help Europe correct its current trajectory, restore stability, and reduce the risk of conflict between Russia and European nations,” the report said.
In contrast to the US national strategy during President Trump's first term (2017-2021), which emphasized competition with Russia and China, this new strategy shifts the focus to the Western Hemisphere and protects the country, its borders and regional interests.
The strategy calls for shifting resources from distant battlefields to challenges closer to home, while urging NATO and European nations to shoulder primary responsibility for defending themselves.
The document also calls for an end to NATO expansion – a demand Russia has repeatedly made, saying it is the root cause of the Ukraine conflict, which Moscow sees as a Western proxy war.
Overall, the new strategy signals a shift from global interventionism to a more transactional foreign policy, arguing that the US should only act abroad when its interests are directly threatened.
