The highlight of the final day of competition at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships came from the women's 5,000m event, where Nguyen Thi Oanh - the record holder of Vietnamese athletics - competed with determination.

Although she only finished in 6th place, with a time of 15 minutes 46 seconds 11, Oanh broke the national record she set 4 years ago. At the 2021 National Athletics Championship, Oanh achieved a time of 15 minutes 53 seconds 48 and broke the 18-year-old record (since 2003) of her senior Doan Nu Truc Van (16 minutes 12 seconds 73).

With this new achievement, Nguyen Thi Oanh officially holds 5 national records in the medium and long events including: 5,000m, 10,000m, 3,000m obstacle course, half marathon (21km) and marathon (42km).

The women's 5,000m was Nguyen Thi Oanh's final competition at this year's Asian Athletics Championships. Before that, she failed to make a breakthrough in the women's 1,500m and did not register to compete in the 3,000m steeplechase.

Also on today's competition day, in the women's 400m hurdles, veteran athlete Quach Thi Lan could not create a surprise, finishing in 6th place with a time of 57.04 seconds.

The 2025 Asian Athletics Championships took place from May 27 to 31 in Gumi, South Korea. Vietnam participated with a strong force of 16 athletes and won two medals, including a bronze medal in the women's 100m event by young talent Tran Thi Nhi Yen and a silver medal by the women's 4x400m relay team.
