Preparing for a trip to Hanoi to watch the parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of National Day on September 2nd (A80 event), Ms. PTV (residing in Ho Chi Minh City) researched a tour package priced at 5 million VND, including airfare and hotel accommodation advertised as having a "beautiful view." However, after transferring the deposit, the scammer blocked all contact.
This is just one of many scams used by malicious actors, exploiting people's great interest in the National Day parade.
According to cybersecurity expert Vu Ngoc Son, head of the Research, Consulting, Technology Development and International Cooperation Department of the National Cybersecurity Association (NCA), holidays are always a time when criminals take advantage of the increased demand from people to carry out various scams and spread misinformation online.
The most common scams involve offering cheap, prime locations to watch the parade, such as advertising attractive hotel/homestay packages with stunning views, requesting immediate deposit payments to secure the opportunity, and then disappearing; and scams involving reselling concert or event tickets, such as posting information about reselling tickets "from the owner, at the last minute," requesting payment for ticket delivery, and then stealing the money after the victim transfers it.
Furthermore, malicious individuals spread misinformation online, disseminating distorted information and defaming history.
Exploiting the popularity of the film "Red Rain" and the need to research and look up historical events, they used AI to create fake clips and "poisoned" users with false narratives.
Scammers impersonate BTS stations to send brand-name SMS messages, impersonating banks or delivery companies, requesting users to click on malicious links to follow instructions. This allows them to install malware, steal information, and compromise accounts.
Mr. Son also advised people to be vigilant, only book rooms and receive tickets through official channels; and verify the information of the seller or person giving away tickets.
People should absolutely not transfer money in advance to strangers without verification. Only obtain historical and social information from official news sources and government agencies.
Be wary of brand-name messages requesting you to click on links or provide passwords/OTPs; contact your bank or delivery service directly for verification. Regularly update yourself on cybersecurity warnings and share this information with family and friends.
By correctly identifying scams and being cautious with every click and online transaction, each person can protect themselves and their loved ones from the "traps" of cybercriminals.
