Spain: A food store in Barcelona has introduced a policy of charging 5 euros to customers who only check in without making a purchase.
Opened in 1898, Queviures Múrria is one of Barcelona's most renowned Modernist establishments, specializing in high-end products such as wine, meats, and artisanal cheeses.

The shop retains many antique details, with a striking facade, mahogany furniture, a cash register that has remained unchanged since the 19th century, and advertising signs dating back to the 1920s. Foreign visitors to Barcelona often visit Queviures Múrria to take photos; not many people stay to buy anything, which affects those with genuine purchasing needs.
The store staff used to jokingly tell people who came to take photos for social media that they would charge a fee. Now, that joke has become reality. The store has put up a sign announcing that customers who only check in without making a purchase will have to pay 5 euros.
Toni Merino, the store manager, said they haven't collected any money from customers since the regulation was implemented, but the number of customers coming just to take pictures has dropped sharply.
The city of Barcelona has implemented several policies to mitigate tourist overcrowding in recent years. Earlier this year, the Catalan capital announced an upcoming increase in tourism taxes, varying by type of accommodation. The fee for a 5-star hotel stay will increase from €5.25 to €6.75 per night by 2024.
In addition, the Barcelona City Council has increased the surcharge per night for tourists. This amount has risen from 1.75 euros to 2.75 euros, effective from April 1st, and will increase to 3.25 euros from April 1st of next year.
