My To Viet Anh said that working at global technology companies requires high speed and seriousness, but there are always opportunities for young employees to get acquainted.

"When I started looking for job opportunities in the US, I was rejected by many companies because I had no experience," Viet Anh shared. Luckily, he learned about the opportunity to interview for a job at Amazon. Passing the recruitment round with an algorithm question, he became an official employee in the Video Playback team of Amazon Instant Video - now renamed Prime Video, with the main job of making video players for live streaming.

After 5 years working at Amazon, Viet Anh moved to Facebook and is still working in the video segment in the Video Infrastructure group. From a fresh university graduate, conquering the recruitment rounds of technology giants, Viet Anh has gained some personal experience.

According to him, new graduates with no experience often have difficulty finding job opportunities at large companies in the US. "You should 'spread' your resumes, ask seniors for help and advice on your CV or write a recommendation email to increase the rate of being called for an interview," he said.

The former FPT University student also revealed that the interview rounds of American technology companies are heavy on algorithms. To pass these questions, candidates need to practice and learn diligently. "I often practice on the Leetcode website," Viet Anh shared. In addition, carefully researching to understand the evaluation and scoring criteria of each company is also the key to passing the interview round.

"Facebook scores based on 4 criteria: problem solving, coding, testing, verification. Therefore, if you just code right after listening to the question, you can still be eliminated because you cannot demonstrate problem solving skills. You should ask more about unclear details, then discuss different ways to solve them before starting to write code," said Viet Anh.

Previously, Viet Anh did not dare to pursue the "American dream" because he was not confident in his professional knowledge or foreign language. However, during his time studying at FPT University, participating in a semester abroad at a technology university in Japan, he had the opportunity to self-study, improve his foreign language skills, and get used to the learning and working environment in a country other than Vietnam. Since then, he has become more confident in his dream of working abroad.

Working at Amazon for 5 years and Facebook for 2 years, Viet Anh has achieved certain achievements. "At Amazon, I became an expert in the field of video streaming. I created a low-latency streaming service that served a large number of viewers. Later, this service was integrated into Amazon Web Services," he said.

According to the FPT University alumni, working at global technology companies will bring him valuable and different experiences. "The most interesting thing I experienced at Facebook was making video services for a billion people, spread across time zones. The way I do software will change clearly when there are a billion users. For example, optimizing to save 10 milliseconds is rarely a priority for a few thousand people, but will be very valuable for a billion people," Viet Anh shared.

Now, while pursuing his long-time favorite job related to Machine Learning at Cruise (USA), Viet Anh considers this a challenge because "no company has been able to completely solve the problem of self-driving cars" but at the same time it is a motivation for him to " explore and feel like a leader".

Having experienced different positions and working environments, Viet Anh realized that although the work intensity at the world's leading technology companies is very fast and serious, there are always opportunities for young employees to get acquainted. He spent 6 months at Amazon, 3 months at Facebook and the same time at Cruise even though he was already a seasoned programmer to get used to the new environment.

"Knowledge about software platforms such as algorithms, networks, and OS is very useful. I may not remember everything after studying, but I will have a basis to look up if needed," Viet Anh shared his experience in applying the knowledge he learned at FPT University. In addition, according to him, the ability to think independently and solve problems are strengths that the FPT University environment creates for students, helping them to easily start working at foreign companies.
