FPT University alumni share their experiences working at American giants

According to My To Viet Anh, working at global technology companies demands speed and seriousness, but there are always opportunities for young employees to gain experience.

"When I started looking for job opportunities in the US, I was rejected by many companies because I lacked experience," Viet Anh shared. Fortunately, he learned about an Amazon job interview opportunity. After passing the initial screening with an algorithm-based question, he became a full-time employee in the Video Playback team at Amazon Instant Video—now renamed Prime Video—with the main job being creating video players for live streaming.

After working at Amazon for 5 years, Viet Anh moved to Facebook and remained involved in the video development within the Video Infrastructure team. As a recent university graduate, having successfully navigated the recruitment processes of major tech companies, Viet Anh has gained some valuable experience.

According to him, recent graduates with little experience often find it difficult to secure job opportunities at large companies in the US. "You should send out many applications, ask senior colleagues for feedback on your CV, or write letters of recommendation to increase your chances of being called for an interview," he advised.

Former FPT University student Viet Anh also revealed that the interview rounds at American technology companies heavily focus on algorithms. To pass these questions, candidates need to practice and learn diligently. "I often practice on the Leetcode website," Viet Anh shared. In addition, thoroughly researching and understanding the evaluation and scoring criteria of each company is also a key to passing the interview.

"Facebook scores entries based on four criteria: problem-solving, coding, testing, and verification. Therefore, if you start coding immediately after hearing the problem statement, you might still be disqualified for not demonstrating problem-solving skills. You should ask for clarification on unclear details, then discuss different approaches to solving the problem before you begin writing the code," Viet Anh said.

Previously, Viet Anh didn't dare to dream the "American dream" because he lacked confidence in his professional knowledge and foreign language skills. But during his time at FPT University, participating in a semester abroad at a technology university in Japan gave him the opportunity to self-study, improve his foreign language skills, and become familiar with the learning and working environment in a country other than Vietnam. From then on, he became more confident in his dream of working abroad.

Having worked at Amazon for 5 years and Facebook for 2 years, Viet Anh has achieved certain successes. "At Amazon, I became an expert in video streaming. I created a low-latency streaming service that served a large number of viewers. Later, this service was integrated into Amazon Web Services," he said.

According to a former FPT University student, working at global technology companies provides valuable and unique experiences. "The most interesting experience I had at Facebook was creating video services for a billion people, spread across all time zones. The way I develop software clearly changes when a billion people use it. For example, optimizing to save 10 milliseconds is rarely a priority for a few thousand people, but it becomes very valuable for a billion," Viet Anh shared.

Now, pursuing his long-held passion for Machine Learning at Cruise (USA), Viet Anh sees it as a challenge because "no company has yet been able to fully solve the autonomous vehicle problem," but at the same time, it motivates him to " explore and feel like a leader."

Having worked in various positions and environments, Viet Anh realized that, despite the fast-paced and rigorous work environment at leading global technology companies, there were always opportunities for young employees to adapt. He spent six months at Amazon, three months at Facebook, and a similar amount of time at Cruise, even though he was already a seasoned programmer, to get up to speed with the new environment.

"Knowledge of software platforms such as algorithms, networks, and operating systems is very useful. I may not remember everything after studying, but I will have a basis to look it up if needed," Viet Anh shared his experience of applying the knowledge learned at FPT University. In addition, according to him, the ability to think independently and solve problems are strengths that the FPT University environment instills in students, helping them to succeed when starting work at foreign companies.
