According to the Australian Government , in the 2026 budget allocation, the University of Sydney will not be allowed to expand its enrollment scale.
Specifically, among 32 schools that proposed to increase enrollment quotas, the University of Sydney was the only school that was not approved because it did not have a specific plan to attract international students. The school also lacked a commitment to cooperate with the Southeast Asian region and did not have clear evidence of investing in building more dormitories.
“It is in Australia’s national interest to engage with Southeast Asia, so the allocation of international student enrolment quotas for 2026 is a recognition of those institutions that have a genuine focus on the region,” said Assistant Minister for International Education Julian Hill.

According to Ms. Kirsten Andrews, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney, the school is committed to building a more diverse student community.
Currently, the majority of the school’s international students come from China. In recent years, the school has attracted students from India, Malaysia, Vietnam, Pakistan and the African region.
“We are continuing to work with the Government to gradually expand the diversity of the student body,” Ms Andrews said.
The Australian government says universities that invest in building more dormitories will be allowed to increase their international student enrollment quotas.
