Green transformation - A key driving force to help businesses stand firm in the face of global market changes

The reality is that the demands of international investors, consumers and major export markets are shifting strongly towards responsible business models. The requirements for emission reduction and resource efficiency are no longer incentives but have become mandatory technical barriers.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Finance Nguyen Duc Tam said that in the face of the fourth industrial revolution and the urgent need for green growth and carbon neutrality, countries are transforming strongly. This context creates great pressure but at the same time is an opportunity for businesses to reposition their positions.

The Deputy Minister affirmed: “For Vietnam, this is both a challenge and an opportunity for us to promote innovation in the growth model, improve national competitiveness and affirm our position in the global value chain.”

Participating in the event as one of the pioneering enterprises in sustainable development, Saigon Beer - Alcohol - Beverage Corporation ( SABECO ) brought a systematic perspective on green transformation for the entire fast-moving consumer goods and food - beverage industry.

SABECO considers sustainability a strategic competitive advantage

In his speech, Mr. Larry Lee - Deputy General Director in charge of strategic assets and sustainable development of SABECO - emphasized: "SABECO carries 150 years of heritage, but future competitiveness depends on the speed and determination of our own transformation."

With a large scale of operations with 25 breweries and more than 200,000 points of sale nationwide, every small improvement in ESG by SABECO creates a significant impact on the value chain and the community. SABECO's green transformation strategy is comprehensive and long-term, gradually realizing the goals that the whole industry is aiming for.

By 2024, SABECO had achieved impressive numbers demonstrating the effectiveness of this strategy.

In terms of energy, the rate of renewable energy use in production reached 40.54%. The rooftop solar power system generated 7,843 MWh of clean electricity. Combining optimization solutions, SABECO reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 9.3% (scope 1 and 2), reduced power intensity by more than 8% and improved emission intensity to 7.55 kg CO2e/hl.

In water management, SABECO is a pioneer in using "water risk maps" to guide investment in drought-prone areas. This shows that sustainable development here is not only about compliance but also about strategic risk management.

Regarding packaging use and recycling, SABECO has built a national-scale circular economy model. Currently, 100% of primary packaging can be recycled or reused. The recovery rate of glass bottles is 75-80%, and the weight of aluminum cans has decreased by 15% compared to 2019.

These achievements not only demonstrate the determination to transform but also lay a solid foundation for long-term initiatives in the future. At the conference, SABECO was also honored in the “Top 50 outstanding enterprises for sustainable development”, continuing to affirm the leading position of the enterprise in the journey to create a green future.

Long-term vision: Leadership and collaboration

Vietnam has a strong vision for green growth, creating momentum for both large and small businesses to transform more effectively. With the position of an industry leader, Mr. Larry shared more about SABECO's motto in three sentences: "Lead when possible. Support when necessary. Collaborate to create shared value."

In the coming time, SABECO commits to continue expanding the scale of renewable energy and applying advanced energy saving solutions throughout the factory system. At the same time, the enterprise will focus on improving water management capacity and investing in long-term water source replenishment projects.

The circular economy strategy is also promoted through sustainable packaging models and the proactive implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations. SABECO affirms that it will closely cooperate with the Government and partners to replicate successful models, demonstrating a leading role and creating momentum for the green transformation process of the entire industry.

Concluding the presentation, SABECO said that the company believes that with synchronous policies, a solid ESG foundation and the cooperation of the business community, Vietnam will not only achieve the Net Zero target, but can also become a pioneer country in the sustainable fast consumption model in the region.
