The Australian Embassy said it is working with international partners to raise awareness of visa fraud and illegal migration as part of International Fraud Awareness Week, which runs from 16 to 22 November.
Visa fraud is a global problem, where criminals trick victims into believing they will get a visa, but in reality it is a fake visa or a fake visa document. These scams can cause significant financial loss, emotional stress and other long-term effects.
Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Gillian Bird said: “Australia is proud to work with international partners to combat visa scams. The campaign to combat visa scams sends a clear message: If you apply for a visa, always use official and trustworthy sources, and be wary of those promising shortcuts or guaranteed results.”
“Every day in Vietnam, we see posts on social media offering false promises of assistance in obtaining an Australian visa, for between VND500 million and VND1.5 billion, taking advantage of people’s emotions and needs. Do not fall prey to these scams because they will take your money, steal your personal information and put you in dangerous situations. Remember, only the Australian Government can issue you a visa,” Ambassador Bird stressed.
At a conference on the issue in September this year, ministers from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US affirmed their commitment to working together to protect migration and border systems.
Australian visa applicants should visit the Department of Home Affairs website for information on identifying and reporting fraud. The Australian Government does not solicit payments through social media or unofficial websites.
