North Korea has decided to convene a plenary meeting of the Central Executive Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) in early June.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on May 29 that the decision to hold the 8th Plenary Session of the 8th Central Committee was made to review "the implementation of national economic plans in the first half of 2023 and discuss important policy issues."
The fact that North Korea held a plenary meeting twice in the first half of the year seems unprecedented, as Pyongyang typically only convenes such meetings once or twice a year.
Last February, WPK held a central conference to focus on discussing the country's agricultural issues.
North Korea appears to be facing significant economic difficulties amid international sanctions imposed due to its nuclear and missile programs, as well as prolonged lockdowns to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
