(NLĐO) - The theme of lesbianism is rarely explored on stage, but "Theatre Village" left a beautiful mark with "The House Without Wind".
Director and Meritorious Artist Vu Xuan Trang presents graduation certificates to four young actresses who participated in the play "House Without Wind".
On the evening of December 28th, the "Drama Village" stage held a graduation performance by four young actresses with the script "House Without Wind," which was adapted by author and director Meritorious Artist Vu Xuan Trang from the work "The House Without Men" by the late writer Ngoc Linh.
He skillfully incorporated into the play the plight of a lesbian character who dared to love and dared to fight for happiness.
The mother—the most pitiable character in the play—felt the whole world had turned its back on her. After being betrayed by her husband, she poured all her love into her two daughters and her younger sister, Cam Tu. However, her harsh upbringing and the instilling of resentment towards life and men in her children resulted in a home devoid of any warmth or comfort.
Drama creates conflict and evokes a wide range of emotions in the audience.
While many directors have successfully staged this play, Meritorious Artist Vu Xuan Trang has created fresh psychological shifts by having the character Bao Lan not love men and openly declare to her mother that she belongs to the LGBTQ+ community . The narrative draws the audience to the depths of the characters' pain. The story told on the "Drama Village" stage reflects what is happening in contemporary society.
The lesbian theme on the "Drama Village" stage promises to attract audiences.
The play is set in a suffocating, oppressive house. It's not that the four women living there are incapable of finding love, but rather that they all fear Mrs. Kim Tho finding out and live according to her wishes until Bao Lan comes out as gay, and An Chi – the youngest daughter – is discovered to be pregnant with Dung – the man she loves wholeheartedly.
And it was Kim Tho's (the mother's) unnatural hatred of men that led to her own tragedy. The barriers she had erected in the house could no longer hold back the winds; they swept away all the unusual, unconventional principles, contrary to the intense desires of her children and her sister to be loved.
The actors made every effort to evoke strong emotions in the audience with the play "The House Without Wind".
In her role as a mother, actress May Trinh portrays a harsh and confident character. She is blind and believes her blindness is necessary to impose on her children, including her sister, in order to keep the house from falling into turmoil.
Quỳnh Nguyễn's portrayal of Cẩm Tú was very realistic, gentle yet heartbreaking. Luna Phạm, supported by Thụy My, delivered impressive climactic scenes, evoking strong emotions for the girl who dared to live authentically with her gender identity. Actress Hoàng Châu's portrayal of An Chi had many beautiful moments of quiet reflection; her gentle, innocent acting brought tears to the audience's eyes as they sympathized with her fate. All the roles were psychologically demanding, requiring more life experience to convey the depth of their characters, but all four young actresses portrayed them authentically through their own emotions.
The play also features actors such as Thanh Phuong, Quoc Huy, Yen Thanh… bringing a wide range of emotions and welcoming a new generation of young actors trained at the "Drama Village" theater – a place that recently brought home one gold and one silver medal for its students at the 1st Ho Chi Minh City Theater Festival in 2024 for the play "Khuc Da Tam".
When moving to their new location at the Experimental Stage of the Ho Chi Minh City College of Dance, "The Drama Village" hopes to create opportunities for young actors to have many good roles to serve the audience, including the play "House Without Wind".
