Patient TMH (58 years old, residing in Binh Thuan ) had symptoms of epigastric pain for several months and slow digestion, so he came to the hospital for examination.
On December 18th, Dr. Hoang Anh Dung (Department of Gastroenterology, Military Hospital 175 , Ho Chi Minh City) stated that a gastroscopy revealed a 4x6 cm submucosal tumor in the body of the stomach, with a shallow ulcer on the surface of the lesion.
Following a multidisciplinary consultation involving gastroenterology and abdominal surgery specialists, the surgical team decided to perform a laparoscopic submucosal dissection to remove the entire lesion.
Endoscopic images revealed a large submucosal tumor in the stomach.
According to Dr. Dung, due to the large size of the tumor, the intervention carried many potential risks of complications such as bleeding or perforation of the stomach during removal. However, thanks to the efforts of the surgical team, the tumor was removed intact without damaging adjacent organs. After only 5 days of treatment, the patient recovered, was able to walk normally, and was discharged from the hospital. The pathology results confirmed that the tumor was a benign proliferative polyp, with no risk of developing into cancer.
Endoscopic submucosal resection is a therapeutic endoscopic procedure used to remove early-stage cancers or large polyps in the esophagus, stomach, colon, and anus without surgery. It is one of the minimally invasive interventions currently available, safe for all ages, especially elderly patients with early-stage gastrointestinal cancers.
Advice from doctors about stomach health you need to know
"The highlight of endoscopic gastric mucosal resection is the complete resection of large lesions, allowing for precise and thorough removal without cutting into adjacent organs, shortening treatment time, and helping patients avoid surgery; patients recover quickly and resume normal activities after the intervention," Dr. Dung said.
Dr. Dung advises people to have regular health checkups to detect diseases early. When experiencing unusual symptoms, they should not try to endure them but should go to a medical facility for examination. The earlier a disease is detected, the smoother the treatment and recovery process will be.
