(Dan Tri) - This year's high school graduation English test is considered too difficult, candidates with IELTS have an advantage in university admissions when in some places 5.0 has been converted to 10. However, many schools also reject IELTS.

In the context of English being difficult to score, candidates with IELTS certificates have an advantage in university admissions as many universities across the country now accept IELTS score conversion.

Up to now, there are over 50 universities nationwide that have announced the conversion of IELTS scores as well as other certificates in university admissions.

Schools convert IELTS, TOEFL and other equivalent certificates into English subject scores in university admissions in 2025 differently, there is no common standard.

There are schools where 5.0 IELTS is converted to 10 points, but there are schools where 8.5 is required to get 10 points.

Some schools accept IELTS conversion from 4.0 such as Vietnam Agricultural Academy, Hanoi Capital University, Saigon University, Hung Yen Technical Education College, Phan Chau Trinh University, Nha Trang University.

Most schools require 5.0 IELTS, commonly converted to 7-8.5/10 English points. Schools convert to 10 points ranging from 6.5 to the highest level of 8.5 IELTS.

University of Commerce calculates IELTS score of 10 from 5.0 only.

In the Northern region, 12 member schools of Hanoi National University have agreed on a common conversion method.

Schools accept IELTS 5.5 or higher and count 8.5 points for English at this level. Candidates with IELTS 6.0 are counted as 9 points, IELTS 6.5 is counted as 9.5 points and IELTS 7.0 or higher is counted as 10 points.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology has a gentle conversion rate when 6.5 IELTS is counted as 10 points.

National Economics University calculates 10 points for IELTS from 7.5. Foreign Trade University, Banking Academy, CMC University calculates 10 points for IELTS from 8.0. Diplomatic Academy has the highest IELTS conversion rate when from 8.5 can be converted to 10 points.

In the South, at the University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University), IELTS 6.0 is converted to 10, 5.5 is converted to 9, 5.0 is converted to 8.

At Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, IELTS 4.5-7.0 is converted to 7.5-10 points.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry converts IELTS 5.0-5.5 to 8; 6.0-6.5 to 9; 7.0 and above to 10.

At International University (Ho Chi Minh City National University), candidates with IELTS certificate from 7.0 will be converted into 10 points in English for admission.

Ton Duc Thang University accepts IELTS certificates from 5.0 converted to 7 points and 10 points from 7.0.

In addition to converting IELTS and other certificates, many schools give priority to candidates with IELTS and TOEFL certificates.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics considers candidates with IELTS certificate from 6.0 or higher; TOEFL iBT from 73 points or higher and also gives priority to candidates with SAT, ACT certificates.

University of Information Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) gives priority points to candidates with IELTS and TOEFL iBT certificates.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, and Ho Chi Minh City Open University all give priority to candidates with IELTS certificates from 5.5 to 6.0 depending on the school.

Many schools refuse to convert IELTS

In addition to schools that have announced IELTS conversion, many schools have not converted foreign language certificates to English graduation exam scores or outright refused this certificate.

This is the first time Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine has used a combination of English subjects in the admission of A01 (math - physics - English) and B08 (math - English - biology).

However, the school flatly refuses to convert IELTS scores or English certificates into English scores in the admission combination.

In the school's latest admission announcement, the school noted that for majors using admission combinations with English subjects, the school only applies to candidates with high school graduation exam scores in English in 2025.

The school does not convert foreign language certificates used for high school graduation exam exemption into English scores for admission consideration.

Only the medical major in the Vietnam-Germany joint program conducts admission after candidates complete the admission procedures. The school requires candidates to have an English proficiency of IELTS 5.5 or higher or TOEFL iBT 75 or higher or equivalent.

This year, Hanoi University of Architecture stopped directly admitting candidates with IELTS 6.0 or higher.

International English certificates are only added to the admission priority points in the admission subject group, but do not exceed the maximum score of the scale. And this admission priority is only applied to candidates applying for the advanced program in architecture.

Hanoi Medical University announced to maintain two stable methods including direct admission of excellent national students according to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, and consideration of high school graduation exam results.

The school does not announce whether it accepts IELTS certificates as English graduation exam scores or not.

English certificates cannot be converted into 10 points in graduation recognition consideration.

The 2025 high school graduation exam regulations have removed the regulation that candidates exempted from the foreign language test will be given 10 points for this test to be considered for high school graduation recognition. If candidates want to take the foreign language test in the graduation exam, they must use this test result to calculate the high school graduation score and cannot convert it to 10 points as before.

In the 2025 high school graduation exam and beyond, English certificates such as IELTS, TOEFL, and TOEIC will continue to be used for exam exemption in graduation recognition consideration, but will not be converted into 10 points in graduation recognition consideration as before.
