Currently, the relic site consists of two main parts: the house of comrade Hoang Van Thu, which was ranked as a national historical and cultural relic in 1993, and the memorial house of comrade Hoang Van Thu, built in 2009 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth (November 4, 1909 - November 4, 2009). In 2019, the works continued to be invested in, renovated and repaired.
Having the opportunity to visit the relic site on a day at the end of October 2025, I was extremely impressed with the space here. Entering the common area of the relic site is an open space with a large fish pond and a very elaborately carved stone relief, describing the revolutionary struggle of comrade Hoang Van Thu, along with cultural and artistic activities and the daily life of the ethnic people of Lang Son province.
On both sides of the campus are waiting areas for people and visitors. Located in the middle of the relic site is the memorial house built in the style of a stilt house with 3 main rooms, in which the middle room is arranged as a celebration room with a portrait of comrade Hoang Van Thu. The remaining two rooms are arranged with exhibits.
About 200m from the memorial house, near the mountainside, is the traditional stilt house where comrade Hoang Van Thu was born and raised. The house has 3 rooms, 2 roofs, 5 rows of pillars placed on stone blocks, the roof is covered with yin and yang tiles, the middle room has an ancestral altar and a table and chairs, tea cups for guests, the back half of the house is divided into a kitchen, where farming tools and daily living items of the comrade's family are displayed.
Mr. Vy Luan Cuong, the relic site's tour guide, said: The exhibition area currently displays more than 100 documentary images, documents, artifacts, and a summary of the biography of comrade Hoang Van Thu's revolutionary life. The collection of personal relics is relatively rich and diverse, including scissors, an iron, a lime pot, a porcelain pillow, a weight, a set of ethnic clothes, a basin, a machete, a sharp knife, etc. These are the items that comrade often carried when he went to do revolutionary activities. Prominent among these relics are articles that comrades published in revolutionary newspapers to propagate and enlighten the people. These artifacts depict the life and career of comrade Hoang Van Thu associated with important historical events of Lang Son province in the early period of the August Revolution (1936 - 1945).
During these days, the memorial site of comrade Hoang Van Thu has welcomed many delegations of guests, students, and people to visit. Nguyen Thu Thao, a first-year student at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, emotionally shared: Standing in front of the rustic stilt house and the solemn memorial house, I seem to see more clearly the difficult but always optimistic life of comrade Hoang Van Thu. This place is truly a meeting place for each of us young people to return to our roots and remember the great sacrifices of comrade. Through that, it reminds us of our responsibility to protect and build the Fatherland, worthy of what our ancestors have contributed.
Not only Thao, the feeling of pride is also a common feeling of many people and tourists inside and outside the province when coming to this place. It is known that from the beginning of 2025 until now, the relic site has welcomed over 5,000 visitors to visit, research and study.
Ms. Hua Quynh Nga, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoang Van Thu Commune, said: Every year, the commune organizes incense offering and reporting ceremonies on major anniversaries such as the birthday (November 4) and the death anniversary of comrade Hoang Van Thu (May 24). This is an opportunity for agencies, units, organizations, schools and people to return to their roots to review the glorious revolutionary tradition of the nation. In addition, we also coordinate with schools in the province to organize extracurricular and source-returning lessons for students, helping them better understand local history and the example of previous leaders. Currently, the relic site has been recognized as a tourist destination of the province. In the coming time, we will continue to coordinate with functional units to research and collect more documents and artifacts for display; connecting the destination with other tourist destinations in the province.
