Border hotspots in the US presidential race

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên02/03/2024

During a simultaneous trip to the US-Mexico border on February 29 (local time), President Joe Biden and his predecessor Trump argued about the immigration crisis, one of the hottest topics in this year's White House race.

Immigration Hotspots

Shortly after former President Trump called the record number of people crossing the border from Mexico to the US Mr. Biden's fault, the current White House owner asked his opponent to stop "playing politics" and instead propose more effective reform proposals.

"Joe Biden must be held responsible for this (immigrant) invasion," AFP quoted Mr. Trump as saying yesterday in Eagle Pass City (Texas) alongside the state's governor, Mr. Greg Abbott.

Meanwhile, speaking after Mr. Trump, President Biden in Brownsville, Texas, sent a message to his opponent: "Instead of playing politics on this issue, ask the (Republican) members of Congress who oppose the border bill to stand with me."

In 2023 alone, more than 2.4 million migrants, mostly from Central America and Venezuela, crossed the Mexican border into the United States. For Mr. Trump, anti-immigration views have been central to his political agenda from 2017 to 2021, when he was president of the United States. And he has vowed to launch the largest deportation program in American history if elected president this year.

Immigration at the southern border is also a weak point in President Biden’s re-election campaign, with an NBC poll showing Trump leading Biden by 30 points on immigration.

Mr. Trump faces many legal challenges

After his dispute with President Biden at the border with Mexico, Mr. Trump continues to respond to legal challenges in different courts. Yesterday (Vietnam time), Special Prosecutor Jack Smith filed a motion with a court in Florida, asking Judge Aileen Cannon to hold a trial on July 8 in the case of the former president hiding classified documents at his private home after leaving the White House.

Meanwhile, the defense attorney asked the judge to postpone the trial to August 12 for Trump and his political aide Walt Nauta, and to September 9 for the remaining accomplice, Carlos De Oliveira. However, the attorneys representing Trump argued that the former US leader faced an unfair trial because it was held while he was busy running for the White House.

Meanwhile, the Trump campaign has filed an appeal after Cook County Judge Tracie Porter ordered the Illinois Election Commission to remove the Republican candidate's name from the ballot in the state's primary election on March 19, according to CBS News. Judge Porter cited his responsibility in the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021 to make the decision.

Regarding the accusation that Mr. Trump interfered in the 2020 US election, the US Supreme Court is expected to take a long time to complete the proceedings before making an official conclusion on whether Mr. Trump is entitled to immunity from criminal prosecution. Mr. Trump's lawyer said that his client is entitled to that right because his actions were carried out while he was the US president.

Reuters quoted some legal experts analyzing that the Supreme Court justices need to issue a ruling by June 1 if they want enough time to expedite the trial to end before the American people go to the polls on November 5.

The US government was temporarily "rescued"

Yesterday (Vietnam time), the US Congress sent a short-term budget bill to President Joe Biden, temporarily pushing back the risk of a government shutdown on March 1. According to NBC News, the Senate passed the temporary measure, called the CR, with a 77-13 vote. Earlier in the day, the bill passed the House of Representatives with a 320-99 vote. Facing the risk of a government shutdown on March 1, President Biden signed the CR into law ahead of schedule. However, the CR only provides an additional one-week budget for six departments including Agriculture, Commerce, Energy, Interior, Justice, Transportation, and Veterans Affairs. This means that by March 8, the US Congress must pass a new bill to allow these departments to have operating budgets. Meanwhile, the rest of the government will run out of budget on March 22.
