People feel secure sticking with guava trees

In An Phong ward, guava growing model has become an economic development direction, helping many households increase their income and stabilize their livelihoods. This success comes not only from the persistent efforts of growers, but also from the practical and timely support chain from the authorities over the years.

Mr. Tran Van Hanh - who grows nearly 1 hectare of guava in Phi Xa residential group, recalls the difficult early days when he and a household boldly converted abandoned fields to grow guava. Right from the start, he received active support from the local government such as: Supporting cement for internal roads, facilitating land-related procedures, and coordinating the organization of many seminars and training courses on cultivation techniques, care and pest control.

At the same time, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hai Phong (now the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Hai Phong) also guided farmers to approach the biological farming model, prioritizing the use of biological drugs to reduce toxicity, ensure the health of producers and improve the quality of guava. At the same time, the local government and the Department of Agriculture of An Duong district (old) also regularly came down to inspect the field, grasp the growth and disease situation to advise and give appropriate recommendations at each time. Thanks to that continuous support, Mr. Hanh's guava growing model has grown steadily, bringing in an income of about 200 million VND per year after deducting expenses.

“I hope that the authorities will continue to accompany, regularly visit the model and provide more fertilizers and biological pesticides so that people can feel secure in developing a sustainable economy,” Mr. Hanh shared.

Also in Phi Xa Residential Group, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tuyen has more than 1 hectare of guava, earning more than 200 million VND each year and creating more jobs for some local workers. Mr. Tuyen said that he used to work as a construction worker with an unstable income, but since switching to growing guava, his family's economy has become much more stable. He expressed his desire to participate in more technical training courses to continue improving productivity and product quality.

New orientation to improve guava trees

Receiving synchronous support from the Ward People's Committee and specialized units, guava growers in An Phong Ward have boldly applied technical advances, converted to safe cultivation, and improved product quality. The use of biological drugs, application of techniques in pruning, fruit wrapping, etc. has helped guava gardens produce stable yields, beautiful fruits, and meet the increasing demand of the market. This is also the foundation for guava trees to become a sustainable livelihood for many households.

Notably, An Phong ward is aiming to improve guava products by using traceability labeling. Mr. Tran Van Hai - Vice Chairman of the ward People's Committee said that the locality has sent a report to the city's Department of Science and Technology to include guava products in the traceability project. When the project is completed, the products will be labeled and have identification codes, creating competitive advantages, increasing value and opening the way to large markets.

According to Mr. Tran Van Hai, in the coming time, An Phong ward will continue to encourage people to expand the high-tech agricultural model, apply digital technology to sales, production management, and at the same time, invest in irrigation systems or other productivity improvement solutions. In addition, the ward continues to fully implement social security policies to support households in difficult circumstances, helping them have conditions to change their livelihoods and develop the economy based on local advantages.

These orientations are expected to help An Phong guava trees enter a new stage of development, from small-scale production to systematic production, traceability, quality assurance and expanded consumption markets. From there, people will not only have a stable source of income but also move towards sustainable enrichment right on their homeland.

According to the People's Committee of An Phong Ward, in the past 10 months, the agricultural production situation in the area has been relatively stable, with crops growing and developing well. The People's Committee of the Ward has focused on directing agricultural production, guiding cooperatives and households to sow and plant crops on the right time frame, ensuring good crop growth and high productivity.

According to statistics, the area of rice cultivation in the 2025 winter-spring crop of the ward is estimated at 567.7/656.01 hectares, reaching 86.54% of the plan. The area of vegetables and annual crops is estimated at 204.88/224.65 hectares, equivalent to 91.2% of the plan; the area of flower cultivation is estimated at 1.33/1.48 hectares, equivalent to 90.5% of the plan.
