At the Scientific Conference on Clinical Nutrition organized by Bach Mai Hospital on November 18, Dr. Nghiem Nguyet Thu, Director of the Clinical Nutrition Center, Bach Mai Hospital, said that nutrition plays an important role in increasing the resistance and recovery ability of patients, especially those with cardiovascular, urinary and endocrine diseases. Particularly for diabetes, nutrition determines up to 80% of the treatment effectiveness.
As a place that regularly receives and treats critically ill patients, Dr. Tran Thu Trang, Intensive Care Center, Bach Mai Hospital also said that nutritional support plays an important role in critically ill patients in maintaining and restoring nutritional status and muscle function.
"The rate of malnutrition in severe patients here is about 38-78%. Patients often suffer from infections, poor appetite, loss of gastrointestinal function... leading to increased catabolism causing protein loss, muscle loss and muscle atrophy, physical decline even after ICU... Therefore, nutritional support will help patients maintain life to fight against adverse effects", said Dr. Tran Thu Trang.
As the first unit in Vietnam to provide specialized diets for patients with swallowing disorders through cooperation with Japanese experts (JIHS), the Clinical Nutrition Center, Bach Mai Hospital is currently managing and providing an average of about 8,500 meals per day for inpatients, equivalent to 80% of the demand.
These diets are designed by doctors and nutritionists based on specific diseases, then prepared right in the hospital kitchen. The center is also the unit that monitors nutritional values, checks food safety and periodically takes random samples to test medical meals and food for sale...

Nutritional regimen for patients treated at Bach Mai Hospital
"To ensure that all hospitalized patients are screened for nutrition, nutrition staff must also proactively examine and provide nutritional treatment for patients, regularly visit the ward with the treating physician, and participate in hospital-wide consultations for difficult cases... Pathological nutrition regimens - hospital diets are all built on evidence and recommendations from clinical nutrition associations," said Dr. Nghiem Nguyet Thu.
At the workshop, experts also emphasized that patient care combined with a balanced and reasonable nutritional regimen will help patients, especially children, the elderly, people with underlying medical conditions, and seriously ill patients, recover their health best and shorten treatment time. Especially with non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, blood pressure, diabetes, etc., nutrition plays a particularly important role.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Tuan Tung, Deputy Director of Bach Mai Hospital also shared that at the Hospital, the Clinical Nutrition Center has been perfecting a comprehensive nutritional treatment system, implementing screening, assessment and intervention for 100% of inpatients, making nutrition an active treatment measure and participating deeply in hospital-wide consultations.
Currently, the Center is also coordinating research on nutritional regimens for complex diseases such as severe hypertriglyceridemia and nutrition for organ transplant recipients.
As a professional management agency in the medical treatment system, Mr. Vuong Anh Duong, Deputy Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management, Ministry of Health , also assessed the important role of clinical nutrition for patients. Even the nutritional regime needs to be focused on throughout a person's life, according to each age and stage of development, ensuring a balance in the daily meal composition.
The representative of the Ministry of Health also said that in the coming time, the Ministry will develop professional documents on basic clinical nutrition; nutrition for cancer patients; nutrition for ICU patients; nutrition for patients with surgical diseases... to increase the effectiveness of treatment for patients, thereby contributing to the care and protection of the health of the entire population.
