French star Novak Djokovic was booed by the French crowd for celebrating after winning a service game in his first-round match against Aleksandar Kovacevic at Roland Garros.
After winning the first two sets 6-3, 6-2, Djokovic faced difficulties against Kovacevic in the third set. Nole allowed the world number 114 to win his service game, leveling the score at 3-3. But in the very next game, the world number two had a break point. After a long rally, Djokovic won the crucial point with a backhand winner.
The Serbian tennis player celebrated his point by raising his hand to his ear to listen to the crowd, then punching the air. Fans on the Philippe Chatrier center court booed Nole. Eurosport suggested the reason was his excessive celebration against an opponent ranked 112 places lower in the ATP. From another perspective, the reputable news site assessed that this point celebration showed Djokovic respect for his opponent and played to the best of his ability in his opening match victory of 6-3, 6-2, 7-6.
Djokovic celebrates winning the point in game 7 of the third set.
"He played really well, controlled his mentality and maintained his form," Nole praised his American opponent after the match. "He won my decisive service game and took the third set to a tie-break. I always want to dominate every opponent, no matter the circumstances, but I can't always do that."
Another detail shows that Djokovic wasn't being complacent in his Roland Garros opening match. After easily winning the first two sets and the first service game of the third set, Nole served and saved three break points in a row. When the score was 40-40, Nole served a tricky ball into the T-corner, making it impossible for his opponent to reach the ball with their racket. However, the umpire did not recognize it as an ace, as the electronic signal indicated the ball had hit the net.
Djokovic was furious with the decision, telling the umpire, "Check the equipment, this is unbelievable. This has happened five times in the match already." The umpire then upheld the decision, and Nole had to serve again amidst boos from the crowd.
Djokovic argued with the umpire.
Djokovic's opponent in the second round is world number 83, Marton Fucsovics. Djokovic has won all four of his previous encounters with the Hungarian player.
