Mazda BT-50

Since the beginning of May 2024, the Mazda BT-50 pickup truck model has been officially removed from the list price by Thaco Mazda. According to information from Mazda Vietnam, the suspension of BT-50 imports has been in place since the beginning of the year and dealers will continue to sell the number of vehicles in stock from the previous year.

Although the BT-50 was once in the Top 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam, pressure from fierce competition, especially from the Ford Ranger, has caused sales of this model to plummet. According to data from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), in the first half of 2024, the BT-50 sold only 5 units, while the Ford Ranger accounted for 84% of the market share of the pickup segment.

Suzuki Ciaz

Although highly appreciated by consumers for its easy-to-use design, fuel economy and spacious interior, Suzuki Ciaz has had difficulty competing in the B-segment sedan segment. Its market share has been dominated by the trio of Hyundai Accent, Honda City and Toyota Vios.

Sales of many types of cars have decreased sharply, according to the Vietnam market, picture 2.

Ciaz sales totaled just 1,117 units in 2019, which is equivalent to the average monthly sales of a rival model. Since the second half of 2023, Ciaz has been regularly on the list of the slowest selling models, with no attractive options for customers.

Suzuki Ertiga

The urban MPV Suzuki Ertiga was expected to create strong competition with the Mitsubishi Xpander. However, Ertiga's sales have continuously plummeted. Despite its low price, its poor design and performance have made this model unpopular with consumers, especially those using the car for transportation services.

Despite the addition of a mild-hybrid version to increase competitiveness, even this version did not help Ertiga restore its position in the market.

Toyota Yaris

Toyota Yaris, a B-class hatchback, has never been focused on sales because this task has been performed by Vios. However, the appearance of Yaris is mainly to build the brand for Toyota in Vietnam.

Before being "discontinued", Yaris sales dropped sharply, to only 8 units in the first 5 months of 2024. However, Toyota representatives still left open the possibility of bringing Yaris back to the market in the future.

The quiet demise of car models such as Mazda BT-50, Suzuki Ciaz, Suzuki Ertiga and Toyota Yaris shows that the Vietnamese car market is facing many challenges. Fierce competition, changing consumer demands and ineffective marketing strategies are important factors affecting the survival of these car models.
