"If this call means that steps are being taken towards a respectful dialogue between our two countries, then dialogue and diplomacy are welcome," Mr. Maduro said at a televised event.
President Trump confirmed on November 30 that he had spoken by phone with the Venezuelan president, but did not disclose details. Previously, US media reported that Mr. Trump had spoken with Mr. Maduro to discuss a possible meeting between them in the US.

In the face of recent diplomatic and military pressure, President Maduro said Venezuelan armed forces have been deployed across the country to respond to threats from the US government.
"The 22 weeks of military, civilian and police training have brought Venezuela to the highest level of comprehensive defense capability we have ever achieved," Maduro said in a video address released by the country's Strategic Operations Command on December 3.
The US has accused the Venezuelan government, without providing any evidence, of not doing enough to combat drug trafficking. The US Navy has deployed a strike group led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, a nuclear-powered submarine and more than 16,000 sailors to the Caribbean Sea.
Since early September, the US military has carried out at least 21 raids on alleged “drug-carrying” vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific, killing at least 83.
On November 29, President Trump announced that he would close Venezuela's airspace. However, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil said that a plane from the US carrying 266 Venezuelan migrants had just landed in Venezuela on Wednesday.
US media have repeatedly reported that Washington could soon begin an attack on Venezuela. On November 27, Mr. Trump said that Washington would "very soon" begin a ground operation to combat drug trafficking activities from Venezuela.
