(Dan Tri Newspaper) - After defeating Thailand to win the AFF Cup 2024, the Vietnamese national team set a series of records.

Vietnam defeats Thailand to win the AFF Cup 2024.

The second leg of the 2024 AFF Cup final between Vietnam and Thailand was incredibly thrilling. After 90 minutes of play, Coach Kim Sang Sik's team won with a score of 3-2. Thus, the Vietnamese team became champions with an aggregate score of 5-3 after two legs.

Notably, the Vietnamese team showed great composure and fighting spirit after Supachok scored a controversial goal. The "Golden Dragons" deserved to win the championship, surpassing Thailand in fighting spirit and desire to win.

This is the third AFF Cup championship in the history of the Vietnamese national team. Previously, the "Golden Dragons" won the tournament in 2008 and 2018. We are the third most successful team in this tournament after Thailand (7 titles) and Singapore (4 titles).

The Vietnamese national team has a remarkable track record of preventing opponents from achieving three consecutive championship titles. In the 2008 AFF Cup, we eliminated Singapore, a team with two consecutive titles (2004, 2007), in the semi-finals. A similar situation occurred in the 2024 AFF Cup when Thailand also fell to Vietnam after coming very close to this great record. Prior to that, they had won the AFF Cup in 2020 and 2022.

"The Golden Star Warriors," along with Singapore, are the only two teams to have defeated Thailand twice in the finals. Singapore achieved this in 2007 and 2012. Meanwhile, the Vietnamese team overcame the "War Elephants" in the AFF Cup finals in 2008 and 2024.

Coach Kim Sang Sik's team made history by becoming the team with the most wins in a single AFF Cup tournament, with 7 wins. Even Thailand, despite having won the tournament 7 times, hasn't achieved that many victories. Vietnam's record in this year's tournament is 6 wins and 1 draw.

The Vietnamese national team also boasts the highest goal difference in the team's history when participating in the AFF Cup with +14 (scoring 20 goals, conceding 6). In the 2022 AFF Cup, the "Golden Dragons" set a new record with a goal difference of +13 (scoring 16 goals, conceding 3).

This is the first time the Vietnamese national team has had two players score four or more goals in an AFF Cup tournament: Xuan Son (7 goals) and Tien Linh (4 goals). Xuan Son made history by becoming the highest-scoring Vietnamese player in the tournament's history with 7 goals, surpassing the previous record of 6 goals held by Huynh Duc and Tien Linh.

However, Xuan Son has not yet been able to break the record of Noh Alam Shah, who scored 10 goals for Singapore in the 2007 AFF Cup.

At noon on January 6th, the entire Vietnamese team will return home. They are ready to celebrate their victory in the embrace of their fans.
