" I often tell the players that we need to move beyond Southeast Asia, because we've already won many tournaments in the region. But, if we want to go even further and compete on equal footing with continental opponents, we need to be more proactive, wiser, and more skillful," coach Philippe Troussier shared.
Having led the Vietnamese national team and U23 team since March, Coach Troussier has clearly shown his intention to implement a completely different football philosophy compared to his predecessor. The French coach wants his players to play an attacking style that dominates opponents, control the ball as much as possible, and build a well-defined attacking game.
Coach Troussier added: " The players must be more clinical in open play, more effective in situations where they rely on set pieces. To achieve this, the players must improve both individually and collectively ."
Coach Troussier was pleased with the players' efforts.
Following this training camp, Mr. Troussier expressed satisfaction with the players' spirit and effort. However, the players still have many areas to improve, especially the defense.
" In the previous match, we controlled possession for most of the game. Therefore, the whole team pushed high up the field and spread out horizontally. This created opportunities for the opponent to counter-attack. After the match, we practiced defending against counter-attacks and transitioning between attacking and defensive phases."
"I don't see any problems with the players' abilities. I have defenders who are very good defensively. However, to do even better, they need to improve their collective defensive capabilities. In the match against Syria, we will face a similar problem. I and the players have prepared thoroughly for both attacking situations and defensive structures. Hopefully, the players will be wiser and more skillful ," said Troussier.
The head coach of the Vietnamese national team assessed Syria as a strong opponent, but the difference between the two teams was insignificant. Besides the goal of developing a playing style and testing tactical options, Coach Troussier also wanted his team to achieve the best possible result.
" I want to refine the players' playing style and tactics. In terms of FIFA rankings and squad strength, Syria is stronger, but that's only on paper. We have the home advantage. I also sense a great sense of unity among the players, both in their tactics and their desire to conquer the challenges ahead. Syria will be a challenge for the Vietnamese national team to overcome and aim for the World Cup qualifiers at the end of the year ," said Coach Troussier.
