Vietnam team must go beyond Southeast Asia

" I often tell the players that we must try to surpass the level of Southeast Asia, because we have won many tournaments in the region. However, if we want to go further and compete equally with continental opponents, we must be more proactive, wiser, and more skillful," coach Philippe Troussier shared.

Coach Troussier, who has been leading the Vietnam national team and Vietnam U23 team since March, has clearly shown his intention to apply a completely different football philosophy compared to his predecessor. The French coach wants his players to dominate their opponents, control the ball as much as possible and build an attacking style of play with clear lines.

Coach Troussier added: " Players must seize opportunities and be more effective in open play situations rather than relying on set pieces. To achieve this, players must push their individual and collective abilities ."

Coach Troussier: Vietnam team must go beyond Southeast Asia - 1

Coach Troussier was pleased with the players' efforts.

Through this training session, Mr. Troussier expressed his satisfaction with the players' spirit and efforts. However, the players still have many points to improve, especially the defense.

" In the previous match, we controlled most of the ball. So the whole team pushed up the formation and expanded the width. That would create conditions for the opponent to counterattack. After the match, we practiced counter-attack situations and transitions.

I don't see any problem with the players' ability. I have defenders who are very good at defending. However, to do better, they have to improve their collective defense. In the match against Syria, we will face the same problem. The players and I have prepared well for the attacking situations as well as the defensive structure. Hopefully the players will be wiser and more skillful , "said Mr. Troussier.

The head coach of the Vietnamese team assessed Syria as a strong opponent, but the difference between the two teams was not significant. In addition to the goal of building a playing style and testing tactical options, Mr. Troussier also wanted his team to achieve the best results.

" I want to improve the way the players play and their tactics. In terms of FIFA rankings or strength, Syria is stronger, but that's only on paper. We have home field advantage. I also feel the great solidarity of the players as well as in their tactics. They have a desire to conquer the challenges ahead. Syria will be a challenge for the Vietnamese team to overcome and aim for the World Cup qualifiers at the end of the year ," said coach Troussier.
